Just came from a game where playing CSM 2k points (myself) and my partner 2k points (Orks) had to deal with 1 of our friends rolling a warlord trait to allow nightfighting to take place for an entire game?...

Our friends were playing 2k DE + 2k Necrons

While me and my Ork friend had originally decided, I would run Noise marines + 3 heavy support with ordinance (defilers) and be the backbone of our shooti, he would run in with Ork Nobs and Boys + Trucks.

My friend using the Necron army essentially spent 3 turns moving all of his heavy support and skimmer/xports up in range of shooting/rapid fire, our DE friend didnt move a single unit past no mans land, as he never had to worry about Night Fighting being a factor in his already Shooti by nature army because of all DE having the ability to simply see in the dark v_v''

It was ridiculously frustrating having to move for 3 turns being shot at with Lance weapons and splinter cannons and being blown to bits because of 1 game mechanics completely in favor of 1 army..

Why does Night Fighting have to exist?!

The trait makes night fighting happen for one turn. That's all. Not all game.

And Tau benefit from night fighting as well. That and a lot of vehicles seem to have spotlights. It's not impossible.

Well that royally sucks.. =/ lol

We all thought it was for the rest of the game XD not just my friends... Is it rolled for after each turn there after???

Um, There is no trait that allows it for the whole game, Only the first turn.
What you are talking about is probably Imoteck with his special rule where every turn he rolls a dice, if the roll is higher then the turn it is currently, then it is still night fighting.
and yes DE do have army wide night vision, Which can be a drag for Over powered lists.

But searchlights illuminate yourself along with your target, we found that out tonight when my defiler sacrificed itself to allow other units to freely hit a squad of ravagers lol

Naw he wasnt using Imo. We just thought it lasted the entire game after being "On" from turn one =/

That's why you always searchlight with something expendable. For example, a Sentinel searchlighting for a squadron of Medusas.

(Or just play Tau and laugh at everyone who mentions this silly night fighting rule.)

Noise marine sonic weapons ignore cover as well, so unless you're outside of the 36" no shoot zone, you would have been basically ignoring night-fighting anyways.

It doesn't say that it's 'on from turn one' though. It just says to use Night Fight for turn 1.
