Hi i'm making a very large tau army (trying for at least 10kpoints) and i need an easyish paint scheme that is also different and cool. I thought of painting my models all black and then doing splashes of neon colours on them to make them look like kthey were at a rave. I thought this could also be useful for seeing which tau are in which squad. Ideas and tips and very welcome, thanks

Black base would help on paint time. If most of the model is black, then most of the work is done at the priming stage. Though bright neon colors could be a bitch to paint over black.

I was thinking doing a black base with maybe a deep purple or blue wash and then almost splatter the differnt paints on them. I'd just be buying primer and one pot of each paint and i'd be good

I'd do a grey base/undercoat with a black wash on top rather than painting them flat black. Gives you a much better looking black with shadows/highlights already done.

I've used both Reaper and Citadel paints and I prefer Citadel. Especially if you're going to do a dark grey or black primer, in my experience light Citadel colors cover better over dark primers than Reaper. I've heard from a couple of really good painters that Vallejo paints are the best, but I've never used them.

A friend of mine used flat black paints on some space marines with metallic and flesh highlights, and he said afterwards that he really wished he did an extremely dark blue instead of black, that way you can use black to shade and get details to really "Pop!"

I can honestly suggest you use pastel instead of neon. It may not quite be what you're looking for, but you'll like the end result.

(pastel, the look. not Pastel, the object.)

Do a search for Tron Tau, they were floating around a few months ago. Looked awesome.

What I would do is base everything in black or very dark grey, and edge everything with a single color.

If you don't ever plan on using a UV light, go Google "Dayglow" paints (http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.com/2011/10/tutorial-using-dayglow-colors.html)

Otherwise a typical fluorescent color will work perfectly. I'm a bit of a fan of fluorescent green myself, but any color will work excellently.

Tron scheme suggested above:

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

Could get (or make) some small templates to use with airbrushing on your colours. Could make a bunch of good "splash" shapes pretty easily, which will look better than just dropping paint on it.
