Hey guys, so I'm currently painting some space marines, and this is the first time painting for me so I have a question.

I'm thinning my paint with water, by taking the paint and putting it in this tin lid, and then taking some water and mixing it in until it seems to be about a step above skim milk(I think?)

So when I apply my paint, it seems really blotchy as in parts are really transparent and other parts have little globs of wet paint. It doesn't seem even because of that and doesn't seem to cover anything, but when it dries it seems more normal.

Is this normal?

It's possible you're using the right amount of water but not mixing it enough to get even coverage.

Attempt stirring with an old brush and mix well. It sounds more like you are either adding way to much water or not mixing it enough.

You really only need to thin them that much for airbrush usage. For brush work, theres really no set amount as different brands and colors come in differing viscosities(thickness).

Thinning is mostly used to get the paint to go on smoothly, rather than clumpy or gooey where it can fill in the finer details. So, try adding a little paint first, then a drop or two of water at a time. It shouldnt take too much.

And the blotches sound like a mixing problem, so make sure the paint it self is well stirred or shaken, and then thoroughly mix in the water for thinning.
