So, recently wound up with some nasty experiences dealing with Space Wolves, my first encounter with the Necron flying circus, and soon I fight some Black Templars. I knew thngs going in, and I am trying to figure out what will work to preserve my forces so they will survive to make it into assualt. I built my Tyranids to maximize close combat efficiency. The only shooting attacks in my small army at the moment are bio-plasma shots from carnifexes, and fleshborer outfitted termagants. So, the question is, is what combination of actual ranged units, such as biovores, tyrannofexes, and hive guard, should I use to cover my advance. The few times I have run into armor recently, I generally turn it into mush after a Carnifex charges in. However, my most recent glaring issue is a large number of close range, rapid fire shots on my horde units, and those few big guns sitting in the back of my opponents lines that look at my carnifexes and do not want them coming anywhere near them. So, should I invest in a full 9 biovore assualt team, to launch large blast templates on infantry and do nothing to AV 11 armor, and soften them up? Should I use the knife that are hive guard, and use them to pop the armor, while doing minor damage to large groups of marines? Or do I go for broke and just grab a Tyrannofex, sit in the back with a large screen of termagants, and blow up anything that looks remotely threatening, while still doing minor damage to infantry. Any input would be appreciated.

"There is a cancer eating at the Imperium. With each decade it advances deeper, leaving drained, dead worlds in its wake. This horror, this abomination, has thought and purpose that functions on an unimaginable, galactic scale and all we can do is try to stop the swarms of bioengineered monsters it unleashes upon us by instinct. We have given the horror a name to salve our fears; we call it the Tyranid race, but if is aware of us at all it must know us only as Prey."

Though not directly answering your question, make note of BT's righteous zeal rule. It's basically an extremely easy way for you to deny them objectives by forcing them to charge out of cover.

As far as shooting goes, Hive Guard. Target his armor (especially Vindicators) and force him to foot slog. If he's Black Tide, you'll be looking to mire him down with Ripper swarms on his assault units and set him up for your shooting elements. Mycetic spore Doom of Malantai will do the trick as well.

Judging by Jy2's battle reports the combination of Hive Guard, Biovores, and 2x Devourer Flyrants has been very successful for him.
