Hey Dakka,

Do you think that people would have a problem if I converted IG Stormtrooper models and used the rules of Sisters of Battle? I like rules of sisters, the models of stormtroopers, and the idea of the underdog army that imperial guard cannot hold up.

Thanks,
DaK

Priests with guns? Sounds good to me, they do exist in 40k cannon so you're good to go.

Ok, thank you for the confirmation. I figured it was ok as everyone loves conversions, but I never thought of them to be "priests" with guns specifically.

Go for it. I have a Sisters of Battle army I am working on with Guard allies, though I am going with a vamp/undead theme with them. Conversion/counts as are usually great so long as war gear lines up. My catachans in bondage gear subbed as sisters repentia seem to work just fine. I'll post pics once I get them painted.

Male nuns are monks.

Monks with guns already exist - they're called space marines.

Well, to me it sounds a bit like Female Space Marines - but truth be told, I don't think that most of the players you meet would actually have a problem with your idea, simply because the SoB and their idea have a much smaller fanbase.

I suppose if you want to back it up a little in terms of fluff, you could go with a reeeeally well equipped Frateris Militia (like, illegally well equipped, if the actual Sisters or the Ordo Hereticus ever find out), or better yet the Frateris Templar from before M36. If people are doing Pre-Heresy Armies, then I see no reason why someone shouldn't do a Pre-Sisters Ecclesiarchy one as well.

Although I would probably advise using the IG Codex (or perhaps the Grey Knights Codex for a counts-as-Inquisitor with carapace-armoured retinue?) for rules rather than SoB - in part of course due to my own biased opinion that SoB Acts of Faith should remain unique to this one army, but also because it seems to me that the Sisters' Marine-grade armour and weapons might take away from that underdog style you were looking for.

Either way, good luck with those conversions!

As long as it passes the rule of cool, and is modeled correctly/or at least decently close. I'd play it against my sisters army.

Could have them based on iscariot from hellsing.

And as far as people wanting to play you? I am pretty sure if you go up to most people and ask if they would rather fight sisters or guard the sisters will win out

They could easily be some specially equipped Guard unit, or some crazy lunatics from a world excessively dedicated to the Emprah. The universe is a big place. When it comes to IoM forces, it's difficult to rule too much out, fluff wise. Model wise, it isn't like the Sisters would look like they had power armor on if it wasn't for the backpack, lol.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Imperial Guardsmen counting as wearing power armour is not a good idea.
Male Monks in power armour are Dark Angels. Good luck converting them from Stormtroopers

Probably work

I didn't think the Ecclesiarchy was allowed to maintain an army of men...

Ah, yes, here it is:

After Vandire's defeat the Frateris Templar was fully disbanded and the Ecclesiarchy was barred from ever holding any men under arms. Their role was taken over by the Adepta Sororitas.

Sounds like a no-go then.

Male Sisters of Battle/organized Ecclesiarchy units are just as unfluffy as female Space Marines, at least in the "modern" 40k setting.

A small battle detachment or militant priesthood does not an army make. The idea was that they could never raise and control a single military arm powerful enough for a large scale rebellion. I'm pretty sure they can still equip their individual members with whatever they want. Make it a missionary conclave or something, with enough wealth to afford power armour.

When in doubt, make your army as unique looking and as 'you' as possible. You can have the most amazingly painted army in the world, but if it just a standard chapter/regiment/etc then it really doesn't bring anything new or fun to your opponent visually.

I think it's perfectly reasonable that some Inquisitor's warband has power armored soldiers at his disposal. There's even rules for henchmen to have power armor and bolters in the GK codex. Go nuts!

I'm planning on painting up some Arbites for counts-as Sisters at some point, but that's one of those backburner projects that is so far out I have no clue when I'll ever get to it.
