Good evening Ladies & Gentlemen,

First Army: Imperial Guard
I'm just finishing up my 1500 army list with all of the gifts I received this Christmas.
I'm also ready to start a brand new army with some of my just-beginning friends.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Imperial Guard; but I'm ready for something new.

Second Army: ?
Well, at first I wanted to start Eldar and do Wraithlord spam, but I realised how easily this list would get shut down from AP3 weaponry.
I was looking at a Necon Codex and was really enjoying what I saw, the HQ inspired me to lean towards those. I was doing some research, and from what I found out, they are a pretty shooty army. I don't want to run another gunline army, I want something new and different; and what's the opposite of IG? Close Combat!
Now I'm looking at Blood Angels (Assault Marine spam), Space Wolves (Thunderwolf Cavalry spam), or even Tyranids (leaning away from - friend owns this army)
Could I build a Necron army oriented towards assault?

Anyways, I'm looking for an army that I can have it's main damage be in the Assault Turn; not the Shooting Turn.
Thank you in advance for helping me through this predicament.

6th Edition of 40k lends itself more towards shooting. IG plays different than Necrons because IG is long ranged shooting while Necrons tend to be mid-range shooting like GK.

LRC spam BT is sure to piss people off. At 1500 points run two LRCs loaded with CC Crusader squads and a third empty LRC. Or instead of the third LRC take two Preds . Or four Typhoons. Or plasma bike spam. Or pure melee with some Trampoline Marines. At 2k run another LRC. Thats four LRCs, three of them filled with CC Marines. Ridiculous.

It would probably be a good idea to get an army thats blood brothers with IG. Space marines and friends would be a solid choice. But big whoop, you can live without the blood brothers perk, and since IG basically is an ally of convenience with anybody, personal preference can take hold here.
But if you want a choppy army, orks, nids, CSM, daemons and space marines are a good considerations.

How bout black templars? Awesome but severely underplayed army, close combat, zealous rules, cool color scheme. Its a pretty cool cc army just without the overplayedness of ba's or sw's.

SPACE WOLVES!

Add a Rune Priest to your IG to give them some fun rerolls and have a couple Lone Wolves and TWC to take on the big things that get to close for comfort.

Eldar are really fun, so many choices, cool weapons, and cool units. Aside from guardians which kind of suck, Eldar are fun to collect.

WAAAGH!!!

No offense, but I find Space Marines mainstream and easy to play. I don't like the fact that they are the go to army. Space Wolves at least can take Wolves as troops (so I was told).

As a Necron player who has recently begun looking into IG as a potential second army, I find this thread particularly amusing.

As far as a close combat Necron list: Wraiths, wraiths, and more wraiths. Give them whip coils and a Destroyer Lord. Kit out an Overlord and give him a unit of 5 Lychguards. You can also always go with the scarab farm, using spiders to make more scarab bases each turn.

Tyranids or Orks would fit your taste, Nids are actualy good in 6th. I know this from bitter personal experience since i have to duke it out with seven or so Nid players on a regular basis.

Would a Necron themed army with deapstriking death marks, infiltrating flayed ones, and hard-hitting wraiths/lich guard work?

If you want something non-mainstream that can deal out a significant amount of punishment in the Assault phase, I'd go with Daemons.

Space Wolves all day! TWC is kinda pricey though. I like lone wolves, they dont give a kill point and actually you lose one of the kill points you earned if they dont die in battle due to their quest for a honourable warriors death

Oh confused person, do not lean away from the beauty that is the Tyranid Swarm. Allow me to persuade you through this very informative infomercial.

You have 1 swarm army, now get another! Tired of shooting? We here under the glory of the Hive Mind have the solution! We boast a codex with roughly 3 dedicated shooting units, because after all, why shoot when you can stab things?! We have pets *flashes to a Parasite of Mortrex killing orcs and spawning dozens of ripper swarms*, medium sized bad boys that cut through armor *Flashes to a horde of bonesword equipped Tyranid warriors cutting down space marines*, and our very own group of tank killers that play with their food before they rip it apart *Flash to a close up of a Carnifex ripping apart a demolisher*. We even have a disproportionate amount of flying things! Small flying things that blind you with venom, medium sized flying things that hack you to pieces, and really big flying things that just tend to make you not like them. Yes, we here in the Tyranid fleets have it good. Here, your not an army of one, your an army of...well, we lost count, but there are a lot of us! So, grab your mustard, and bring a bib, because we are always willing to share a meal! Join the Tyranids today.

WARNING: Safety of friends, family, guests, dogs, enemies, neighbors, cats, fish, bacon, plants, or any other form of biomass is not guarenteed. All terms and conditions upon joining the Tyranids are subject to immediate change upon the whim of the Hive Mind. Forcible termination by cannibalism or a giant pool of acid are likely.

I hope this helps you.

Devil's Advocate time!

!!DO NOT PLAY TYRANIDS!!
Why? Well #1 another friend plays them, as you said. But equally important (#2) is that you're playing Guard. The BEST army for adding a second army. Whatever Army you pick up (aside from Tyranids) you can use well alongside or ahead of another army.
Eldar being backed up by a Vendetta helps their lack of Anti-Air and long range Anti-Tank.
Necrons with a blob of Guardsmen behind an Aegis holding an objective while covering the enemy in fire while they advance slowly?
etc

You're blessed by playing an army that is great AND has the best options for allies, so choose an allied army for fluff, not competitiveness. Because no matter what you pick, you can make it competitive.
