One of my local shops has the Space Hulk board game. Its $100 or so. Now, Ive never played myself but Ive read nothing but good things about it. Is it worth the pricetag? Is it easy for non-WH people to get into a play? Replay value?

The game is awesome, but your already playing 40k, whats the point?

The game comes with multiple scenarios that play out differently each time. There are even more online that people have written. Fanfic but they are rated by the users so you don't have to sift through the garbage. I'll look for the link later and post it if I get the chance.

I personally would never spend 100 bucks on it, so I went in halves with my buddy, you should try to do the same.

Replay value..........yes+10

Definitely worth it, get it

$100 is a great price tag if you compare it with ebay auctions..

Well another option you have, i my self plan on doing this at some point in time *knock on wood*, you can order the hirst arts molds and make your own space hulk!

here is the link : http://www.hirstarts.com/corridor/corridor.html

give a nice step by step how to make it. and the pluses are

1) you get to do a lot of modeling and painting if you are into it

2) Looks really cool when its finished and alwasy get peoples attention.

3)is module, you can add as many sections as you want to make as large of a space hulk game as you want.

the draw backs though are

1) you HAVE to do a lot of modeling and painting if you arnt into that.

2) a little bit more pricey, the basic set is 150 just for the molds not counting the plaster, which is super cheap for how much you get.

3) a lot harder to pack around.

To many unpainted models to count.

I dont mind dumping the money, but I dont want it to be wasted. I definitely have people that will TRY to play, but continue to play? Not sure.

What is the gameplay like, as far as movement and fighting? Still similar to WH or a different setup?

Does not compute.

What does playing (or not playing) 40K have to do with purchasing (or not purchasing) Space Hulk? It's its own entity. It can stand alone and/or provide great minis for regular 40K.

One of my club's occasional members bought it JUST for the miniatures and gave the club the rest.

It sat languishing in the cupboard for a while until I could acquire the terminator minis to go with the horde of SH1.0 and 2.0 genestealer models and make it a playable game.

It's an easy enough game to play and it passes the time - and it is originally the reason that GW introduced terminators to the 40k game.

Definitely worth it.

It's a lot of fun. It's not really similar to the 40k rules. Each figure has a certain number of action points each turn, to spend on moving or attacking, generally. 4 for the SM, 6 for stealers. LOS is limited, facing important, and movement tight and constricted, especially for the marines. The marine player has limited time for his turns, to increase the tension and not allow him to mull over his decisions too much.

The first two editions were really fun and introduced a LOT of players to the world of 40k; the third edition is a nice update, with some REALLY great minis. Several of them are in my BA army now.

*ninja* Thanks Mannahnin! Gives me a better idea. I think I will pick it up.

I know it has 'action points' or some such....various amount of moves you can make a turn. (Ive never played the video game either btw). Is it dice based, and working off BS, WS, T, and the usual 40K style attributes? Or is it quick and easy to learn? Most friends of mine dont have the patience to sit around and read a massive tome of rules to shoot a gun once. But if they were to play a few rounds of Hulk, I feel like they would enjoy the setting more, enjoy the models, etc etc and be more apt to move into the more complex end of the hobby.

It's dice based, but the 40k stats have NOTHING to do with it.

In combat, you roll a number of dice (needing a certain result to 'kill' (there are NO saves or wound rolls. Your 'hit' dice are your wound dice so to speak) depending on ranged or close combat.

Genestealers have no guns, so just run at you and slice you up (3 dice in cc) with their 6 AP EACH - but start the game as a number of 'blips'.

Terminators have a range of shooting attacks that each roll a different number of dice, and have different "kill" numbers. In cc, they generally roll 1 die (but certain models get more). In cc, you have to beat their highest roll to kill them.

There are also mission objectives for the marines - and if you don't achieve them in X time, you lose. It can be as simple as "kill x genestealers" or as difficult as "flame these three rooms" (heavy flamer has limited shots). Genestealer player just has to stop you getting objectives.

As Chromedog said, the rules are pretty simple and straightforward. It's definitely easier to learn for someone who is used to boardgames but doesn't have miniature game experience then getting into a wargame.

Most friends of mine dont have the patience to sit around and read a massive tome of rules to shoot a gun once. But if they were to play a few rounds of Hulk, I feel like they would enjoy the setting more, enjoy the models, etc etc and be more apt to move into the more complex end of the hobby.

Space Hulk is basically ideal for this. It served this function for thousands of gamers around the world in the 90s, and the new one would be doing the same thing if it hadn't been a limited edition.

Any version of it is a good one. It is a fun game to play whether you are a 40k player or just someone who likes board games.

If you decide not to get it, I'll send you money to buy it for me, $100 is a steal!

I got a copy for free (working in a game store, promoted it for a couple afternoons, got my copy from doing that). I played during that demo, 2 games at home, then never played it again. Had I paid $100 for it, it would have been a waste. Getting it free, it was worth it. Now I'm planning on getting rid of it, pieced individually since the Terminators are quite valuable individually.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Bargain at 100 bucks in my eyes, it's an excellent game, and the terminators are absolutely beautiful models you can use with 40k as well.

$100 is quite a steal for the 2009 version. People are looking for 3 times that here on ebay. I would buy that in a heartbeat, and I already own it. If you take good care of it you will almost certainly be able to resell it for more; Whether you enjoy the game or not.

To answer your questions, yes it's very simplistic and easy to play, it's suitable for 10 year olds. I believe the reason GW created the game in the first place, was to introduce new people to miniature wargaming (back in the days when they had foresight). They made a bunch of games like Hero Quest, Space Crusade, Tyranid Attack, Ultra Marines, Lost Patrol etc... For a lot of people, those were the first miniature games they played. Space Hulk seems to be the most enduring, so if you are trying to get people into gaming I would say it's a pretty good place to start.

With regards to replay value... The marines have a lot of replay value. Being the Genestealer bitch gets old kinda quickly, but there are a lot of expanded rules for Hybrids and Chaos Terminators etc... Which make things more interesting for the antagonist. There's also a lot of scope for making up your own scenarios and rules, since you have the whole 40k universe to draw from.

Spacehulk 3ed ed. the models alone are worth 100, and the game is a great revamp of 1st ed. Just no the timer is junk and my even be broke when you get it, it really that cheap, the rest of the stuff is good.

Space Hulk is one of the best games that Games Workshop has ever made and is single-handedly responsible for me getting into miniatures wargaming in the early 1990's.

Over the last 20 years my friends and I have played through the campaigns multiple times, including the Deathwing and Genestealer expansions (1st ed).

Absolutely brilliant, wonderful system. $100 is an absolute bargain.

It's absolutely worth it. I was considering $140 to buy it off someone else.

At the very least you could buy it for $100, and sell it on ebay for $200.

Where is it being sold *rubs hands together...*

You must be "nuts" to consider it expensive at $100.

I can't understand why someone who play 40K thinks that it is expensive.

Space Hulk does not play the same as 40K. They are two different games.

The other thing about Space Hulk 3rd is using the Terminators in 40K. There's a lot of value in 12 Terminator figures.

Dont know if this has been mentioned, but there is incursion by grindhouse games. I know its off OP point, but uses similar game mechanics, its cheaper (mine was 15 + shipping), and the non wargamers seem to enjoy american diesel suits vs nazi zombies.

Dont know why that last point is true, but even the ladies seem to tolerate it.

I really like Incursion. From a game stand point set up is easier (one board vice digging through a stack of corridor sections). It comes with card board stand ups which have great artwork and allow a cool looking game without the need to assemble or paint minis (which is a big draw for many folks). The addition of cards to the game mechanism adds some additional interest. You can get minis for everything at additional cost and they are darned nice.
