I have a friend who is trying to get me to try out Infinity. Unfortunately, I haven't heard all that much about it and really can't say I've heard of anyone in the local area playing it, so I'm a bit in the dark on the whole subject.

Anyone care to fill me in on what the whole game's about/ how it runs/ why I should play it over or alongside game x, y, or z.

What games do you currently play and why do you like them?

One person's likes may be another person's dislikes and vice versa. Notably, I like the metal models because they're very detailed, but others seem to dislike the material especially with the dainty detailed bits. As for gameplay, I like how all the factions are capable of many gamestyles and have units that fit a wide variety of niches, but others may complain that the factions lack an identity aside from their aesthetics (Tohaa aside).

Infinity is a 28mm skirmish game set in the near-future with manga-esque aesthetics.

Pros of Infinity:

-Gorgeous models. Almost everything is well-sculpted. It will still depend on your taste of course, but no one can deny that their sculpts are of very high quality.

-Low entry bar. You don't need to spend a lot of money to have an army. This is also why it's common for players to have three or more armies each, since you only need a handful of models at most to have a complete list.

-Tight rules. Unlike 40k with its vague, ambiguous rules, Infinity has a very tight rules set. No more rolling off the dice to determine who's right: it's either you got the rule right or you got the rule wrong.

-Tactically challenging. You are rewarded with how you use your models much more so than what you're packing in your list. This is a game where you can pick the models you like the most in terms of aesthetic value and field them and when you learn how to use those effectively, you can do well. Thus, the mantra of Infinity players that "It's not your list. It's you."

-Free rules! You can download the rules in their website and test it out first before plunging in. See if you like.

-Reactive turns. You don't just sit on your opponent's turn: you get to react and thwart his moves. Of course, that applies to your opponent as well.

-Pretty balanced. There is no OP or underpowered faction. Pick what you like the most and just play.

Cons of Infinity

-Models in metal. Detriment if you don't have the tools or skill to work with metal and you wish to convert your models. Some hobbyist prefer this medium for sturdiness, though.

-No epically big armies. Since it's a skirmish game, you won't be able to field hundreds of troops and dozens of tanks like in 40k.

-Steep learning curve. It's hard to learn the rules first. That is why it is suggested that you start with small army lists (around 100-150) first and the quickstart rules to gt the hang of the rules.

-Still small-ish community. It's growing, but still not as big as GW games or PP.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Would definitely 2nd what heartserenade has said there! Without sounding completely OTT and like a mentalist (so sorry if that's how it sounds! ), as someone who has played tons of different wargames over the past 20+ years, Infinity is probably the most well thought out, exciting to play and tactically challenging of all of them. The models are stupendously beautiful, with a level of detail that puts most other miniatures lines to shame, and will really challenge and improve your painting ability to try and make the most of them. The entry price point is cheap, you can download the rules for free, and you can even use an online army builder program to write your army list. Overall, I can't recommend it enough other than to say you won't be disappointed if you give it a try.

There we go, sorry for that outburst I need to go and sit down now

I just like the fact that you can tweak your army and terrain over the evening and play more than one low points game over drinks and munchies. And your armies fit in a small case, so no broken back after hauling it in the subway and buses.

Are there army builders that work well on an iPad too?

Not as far as I know.

The IA one by Aleph is supposedly getting an iOS version, but as I don't use apple products I couldn't care less when or if it happens.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

Finally, I can say a new Tagline for Infinity... ahem.... "If you liked XCOM, you will love INFINITY!"
Yeah, that's it.
