Hi I bought the new dark vengence box and starter paint kit, models are assembled. But now I don't know where to start or go next. I'm kinda scared of screwing up and wasting all the money I've invested please help

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

Once you have removed the mould lines, prime or undercoat is usually the next step. I personally undercoat white using spraypaint from plastikote (automotive spray paints can be perfectly fine).

Thinning your paints slightly will also help - adding a few drops of water to the pots to make it slightly thinner (ideally you want to be painting with paint which is about as thick as milk) - most new GW paints I have ever got have been very thick and have really needed this step.

Then you can go to town painting whatever colours you want. If you screw things up completely, you can always dunk the models in Simple Green overnight and strip the paint off.

You gotta get your feet wet at some point. Pick out what you think will be the easiest model you have and paint it all the way from start to finish. Getting basic colors blocked in on one guy will really boost your confidence. Dont worry about getting highlights and low lights in on your first guy. Like everything, it just takes practice.

What about washes, and my beginner pack came with only one brush

As long as you use acrylics for painting you don't need to worry too much about wasting money by painting your models poorly. You can always remove the paint with simple green by soaking your models in a bucket of the stuff overnight and then brushing them and giving a good rinse.

As for where to start actually painting. There are a number of guides, I would try googling "how to paint space marines" or even specify the chapter you intend to paint.

You can do washes if you want, or you can do Vivalabuffalo's way with the block colours. Both will teach you brush skills and how much paint/wash you should apply. As for the single brush, one is probably enough for now.

I'm thinking of doing my own colour schemes, and don't I need a messed up brush?, the first layer after the primer do I paint the whole model the main colour I want it?

I recently made my first attempt at painting an army and opted for Grey Knights. I put the name of the model I wanted to paint on YouTube and copied the tutorial exactly. The results were excellent even if I do say so myself.

There will be loads of DV painting tutorials.

I would not have the confidence to go with my own colour scheme on my first project though I must say but I was bad at art at school and don't have an eye for colour schemes.

Also, do you have a GW/hobby store anywhere near you? They could maybe show you some of the basics like dry-brushing and using inks.

Also, I reckon you will need a fine detail brush and a dry-brush.
