my brother and our friend are at a disagreement over Death Company being able to earn points for killing a unit, warlord and such because they are not a scoring unit, can I get some quick clarification on this matter?

You don't have to be a scoring unit to get kill points, otherwise vehicles wouldn't get killpoints either.

Scoring only matters for objective control. Some things never count for any victory point (for example, if the first model to be killed was a mycetic spore, the enemy would not get first blood).

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Digressing from the subject a bit, could you elaborate on this? I don't get to fight Tyranids often but I can't see anything in the entry for Spores that means they don't give away First Blood?

That's incorrect, the first whole unit destroyed grants first blood. It being 10 tacticals, a group of 30 gaunts, a single MC or vehicle.

So long as a whole "unit" dies, it's first blood. It is also possible for both players to get first blood, such as vehicle explodes, wounds and kills solo model that exploded it.

I'm away from my codex at the moment, but basically they have a special rule that says they are not scoring, nor do they count for victory points. When I get home I can elaborate a bit more.

No such rule exists for spores, Mycetic spores do not count as scoring units but otherwise give up kill points as normal. You are confusing mycetic spores and spore mines.

They are non scoring, but do count as VPs. Your thinking of Spore Mines which are ignored for all VP purposes.

Yeah, I realized that after I got home. Oops. However, my point still stands.
