I am trying to get the hang of dwarf fortress. Anyone here have any entertaining stories about the game to keep me going?

Adventure mode. This is pre-food requirement. I manage to somehow train my dwarf to be excellent at everything, rolling through quests and elven towns easily. Then, I find a goblin dungeon, go deep down. I start going further and further, then it gets hotter and hotter. I realise I am going into hell.

I encounter 3 demons, and kill two of them. The last one is ruined, but just manages to push me off the ledge I was on, to my death.

I've never been able to get into dwarf fortress, mainly because the UI is a horrendous sack of doorknobs to the face.

If there was a decent point-and-click UI over the top I think I could get into it, but the current (yes I know there are tilesets, no they didn't make things any better) abomination really puts me off (and, having done my MSc in Human-Computer Interaction, to me the UI is like doing a tequila slammer in my eye)

It's called a Tequila Suicide... and I agree.
I have played DF a bit but I really find it hard to get into because of the UI...

Look up Boatmurdered, Bronzemurder, Oilfurnace, etc. Great reads.

It's free. And it's utterly fandabulus.

It's incredibly confusing, so I'd recommend having a tutorial handing, and accept the first few times are going to consist of fire, and death.

Actually most times are going to consist of that eventually.

I just got attacked by some sort of giant canary like bird I forget the name of, with an external ribcage.

I don't know how it did it, but it brought death and destruction, and slaughtered its way through my pretty poorly armed Dwarven warriors.

God damn Dwarf Fortress.

Yes, the LNP is great. Just the auto install of the Phoebus graphics pack is awesome, never mind all the other features.

After having yet another fortress starve out because of a population explosion, I've decided to be a bit cheaty and edit the raws to make my dwarves never need to eat. I'll turn it off eventually once I get a good food industry running, but for now I have enough other ways for them to die.

If you want more time to set up food stores, limit your mining and production of valuable items. Immigrant waves are influenced by your fort's value produced and imported.

Easy way to get a food industry running: Make sure eating and brewing plump helmet spawn is forbidden (should default that way), and make four 4x4 fields with plump helmets set to all four seasons. As long as you have a decent farmer (something all fortresses should start with IMO) you'll have more plump helmets than you can possibly eat. Should also let you get a brewing industry running quickly, although you'll need to make sure barrel production is up to snuff, as well as micromanage the brewing to keep them from using all the food you just grew (a problem since brewing, unlike eating, doesn't produce spawn), which is decidedly an issue if you've got barrels set to autoproduce.

When did this come out though? Do they have an excuse for it to still be so shoddy?

SHODDY?! I'll have you know that Dwarf Fortress is the most comprehensive 8-bit fluid physics and thermodynamics simulator on the market! And yes, those two facts do have an impact on game play, thank you very much.

The greatness of the game is not in its interface, I'd like to see AAA games with pretty graphics as interesting gamewise as Dwarf Fort.

Ofc I'd also like to see dwarves with more than 2 braincells in my fort when I'm building walls to contain the latest lava disaster.

I didnt mean shoddy like that, I meant in the graphics and user interface. Is there some way to donate like when minecraft was in alpha to fund further updates or has it changed at all since it came out?

I believe they work entirely off of donations, since the game has always been free.

I remember reading an article a year ago where it said they made around $10,000 from donations each year. Not much, but apparently it's enough for them to live off of while they make this game.

If I remember right, they even drew crayon drawings for people who donated. Seemed like really cool guys, if a bit odd.

The graphics are MENT to be like that, its a roguelike so you learn to either see the prettyness of it or suck it up and go download a tileset.
As for the interface, are you realizing just how comprehensive the thing is?

So, winged Titans made of flame? Annoying. Stupid thing caused a grass fire just by coming onto the map. On the bright side, it can't get in due to my roof and drawbridge. On the not-so-bright side: I'm now subsisting on tower cap wood to create charcoal, and I haven't quite gotten the underground tree farm up and running yet.

Also, I've realised that this biome doesn't have nearly enough rain.
