I've had 3 big Ork armies the past few years, but I never got to play more than a few games with my unpainted WAAAGH's before shipping them off again. However, once again, another WAAAGH is pulling me in. This time around, I'm most likely sticking with the green project since my Necron rush has worn off (I have an eternal struggle between Orcs and Undead, and am trying really hard to stick with one)
Main goals: - Mix of fun and competitive - No model will be replaced due to Ork wave releases within the next 2-3 years - No model will become obsolete or replaced once 6th ed. codex arrives
Any feedback on these 3 parts are more than welcome !!
Part 1 - Models
Spoiler:
Starting up a new WAAAGH these days is a bit tricky though. With rumours of upcomming Ork waves and an all new codex in the works. Thing is, I don't want to spend ressources and time, preparing units that will most likely be replaced or obsolete in a near future.
So far, I've made the following list, trying to figure out what models might be replaced. Keep in mind that this is just model wise, not rules wise.
*No replacement model for a long time *Might get an update *Will most likely get new models
HQ
Ghazghkull (Stays the same) Grotsnik (New model) Wazdakka (New model) Zogwort (New model) Warboss (??Most likely a new model??)) Big Mek KFF (??Gone from many websites and looks like an old model. Most likely some new Bik Meks in the future??) Big Mek + SAG (Stays the same) Weirdboy (New model)
TROOPS
Boyz (Stays the same) Gretchin (Stays the same) Trukk (Stays the same)
ELITE
Nobz (Stays the same) Bikernobz (??No idea what will happen with these. Dont feel like converting if they get models a some point??) Meganobz (Rumour of a meganob/tellyportanob plastic kit) Burnas (Stays the same) Lootas (Stays the same) Tankbustas (Rumour of plastic tankbustas) Kommandos (No idea, perhaps plastic?)
FAST ATTACK
Stormboyz (Stays the same) Warbuggies (New model) Warbikes (Stays the same) Deffkoptas (New model) Ork Bommer (Stays the same)
HEAVY SUPPORT
Battlewagon (Perhaps repacked with deffrolla kit, but still the same) Deff Dread (Stays the same) Killa Kans (Stays the same) Flash Gitz (New model) Big Gunz (New model) Looted Wagon (New model)
Part 2 - Army lists
Spoiler:
I want the army to be a mix of fun and competitive. Losing 50 out of 50 games isnt that much fun I will most likely be playing against optimized Grey Knights most of the time, so winning will be quite difficult anyways (Good thing Orks never lose!!). Besides that, I'll be playing against people who build to win and take losing very personal (Shame, but that is what I've got to work with). I dont mind losing most of my games, which I probably will, as long as I'm adding some fun to the crowd. Most of the time, we'll be playing 1500 points.
Based on Part 1, I'm thinking of running these two lists (Will get tweaked a bit) and sometimes mixing them up. At least until a new codex or model wave arrives. Then I'll hopefully have an army which can easily be updated causs I avoided obsolete models.
1 Battlewagon w. deffrolla - 110 1 Battlewagon w. deffrolla - 110 1 Battlewagon w. deffrolla - 110
TOTAL - 1490 points
Kans, Kans, Kans !!!
1 Big Mek KFF - 85 1 Big Mek SAG - 95
7 Lootas - 155 7 Lootas - 155
25 Shoota boyz - 150 25 Shoota boyz - 150
1 Dakkajet - 110 1 Dakkajet - 110
1 Deff Dread w. ccw - 90 1 Deff Dread w, ccw - 90
3 Killa Kans w. skorchas - 120 3 Killa Kans w. grotzookas - 135 3 Killa Kans w. rokkits - 150
TOTAL - 1495 points
A few notes:
- I'll have nobz ready to join the boy squards and a pack of grots to camp objectives - I wanted to build a green tide, but it would most likely include 120+ shoota boys. Thing is, if sluggas becomes decent in the next codex, I'd end up with way too many boyz (I know, there is no such thing as too many boyz!!!) - Bikernobz are both great models and have decent rules. But its a lot of work making say 8 bikernobz and a bikerboss, should they get a shiny new model anytime soon. These are the models I'm torn about the most!!
Part 3 - Purchase
Spoiler:
Based on part 1 and 2, I'm planning on placing the following order. Price isnt much of an issue as I'm getting a sweet deal. But as mentioned earlier, I'm trying to avoid models that I cant or wont use when the 6th ed. codex arrives.
I recommend going with the kan idea, but run two SAG's, not one. Attack a unit of 30 boyz to each. The lootas aren't really needed, more boyz are, but at higher points the lootas are a good addition. Take two skorchas on each dread, and the kans are fine the way they are setup.
Desert Hunters of Vior'la The Purge Iron Hands Adepts of Pestilence Tallaran Desert Raiders Grey Knight Teleport Assault Force

Thanks for the input!
I could easily adjust the list and implement those ideas with the current purchase list (part 3). I'll have 60 shootas and the Kan and Dread weapons are magnetized so easy to swap around. I really love the idea of having two SAG meks, but I'm affraid one of them wont see much action once 6ed codex comes. Anyways, I'm cirtainly considering two SAG's again Might as well get a SAG mek instead of a KFF, if the KFF is getting a new model.
As for sticking with one list, I'd like to keep my options open. I'm not planning on playing anything else but Orks, so having a few army list to pick between will keep things from getting trivial (and I wont run out of modelling work anytime soon )

The biggest problem I see is that when you buy so much it is easy to get over whelmed. Looking at all those minis (or boxes) has made many a player give up and sell their army. Now I always recomend buying a small amount, paint it, and then repeat. Ussualy starting with 2 troops and an hq. That way you finish everything, you get to play and figure out your own style and what you will need and like to play with. Just my 2 teef

A valid point indeed, and I always advice new players to start out slow as well. I've been playing on and off since the 90's, so huge armies arent intimidating anymore. My problem is deciding between the cold and efficient technology of the Necrons or the hillarious brutishness of da WAAAGH. Luckily, Matt Wards tomb-king rape of the Necrons made everything so much easier (I'm one of the few who really liked the simple Tyranid style Necrons)
Here's the last Ork army I sold off. Took me one week of non-stop work to complete. Then came the new Necron codex and I sold it.
Here's my current Necron army which took me 3 weeks to get this far. It is currently for sale, as the newcrons really don't appeal to me. I thought a lot of converting would do the trick, but the army is just gathering dust in my closet
As mentioned earlier, I'm getting a sweet deal, so might as well WAAAGH up
