Does it make sense to you guys that I wanna assemble my Assault Squad with flying bases?

How do I go about doing that?

The most effective ways I've seen it done is by using the normal bases for them but having bits of terrain on the bases that the marines are then pinned into through one of the legs.

Or in some cases using a portion of the flying stand stem to elevate them slightly off the base.

I wouldn't recommend using the full flying stand as they would be on an incorrect base size. You would also probably get really frustrated with them after knocking them over a thousand times.

Eldarain is 100% right, don't use the whole flying. If you want to use the actual bigger base then I'm not sure if that's allowed, but if I had any jump troops I'd use either wire or a transparent rod (I think plastruct may have this; they have coloured rods at least) to stick them to some terrain (although I find people put their assaults too close to the base so it always looks like they jumped off the tip of the rock).

Thanks for the advice guys.

How do I do this 'pin' thingy? Are there instructional videos or something?

It involves using a pin vice to drill into the parts that you want to connect e.g. an arm at the connecting joint, and the area its going to, and then gluing a pin e.g. a part of a paperclip in the the holes.

The idea is to give it more structural integrity. Its used alot for metal models.

thanks for that mate. It makes sense when you said it, but I can't imagine it in my mind!

Any videos of WIP pics you can point me to?

Thanks in advance!

I don't have any videos, though all it is, is drilling a hole, and putting a pin inside it.

I'd be surprised if there are videos out there, for how basic it is

I personally like to double pin if I can, as doing so prevents a part rotating while the glue dries.

GW sells all the tools you need for this, at around about £8-10 per tool. Get some cheap paper clips for using as pins.

GW's vice is very good, the drill is alright, I frequently find myself having fun with the drill bit going in just off centre, thoguh that's the screw fit design for you I guess.

It depends what look/feel you're after. As has been mentioned you can get some sense of 'flight' with transparent rods or pinning wires. Personally I don't like how either looks, when I wanted to do a proper flying base myself I went all out with a greenstuffed plume off the base.

Armorcast has some premade ones if you're not up for making them yourself.

You'd have to weight the base down so they don't fall. Metal base, plastic model maybe?

Johno I love that marine! Looks slightly awkward position, but brilliant nevertheless!!
