Panhandle of OK - No Mans Land

Good morning all, thanks for looking at another intro page.

I have been playing wargames since 1984 starting with Avalon hills Squad leader.
From November 2000, I was very active in Mage Knight and was known as preacherman over there and was a member of the Draconum High Council.
I have over 3.5k mage knight figs including two Apoc Dragons. (I also have the WK Aurora Dropship from MW that I won in a tourney)
During my tourney playing days I finished 3rd in a Dark Riders pre-release tourney and took home a half case of boosters.

I play lots of games, mainly Warmachine and Hordes (400+), and have over the last 6 months been playing Legion in tourneys.

On to GW.
Here's how I got into 40k. A couple years ago I was in a comic book store and I heard the owner saying he was getting ready to order the 40k Blackreach boxes. I asked him "how much?" He said it was a pre-release $35 a box special . so, I took two. Mostly I paint, and have just finished in the last 6 months the first box, plus a big mech and 5 ork lootas, and a tigurus librarian. During that time I found a battle for Macragge set in an old store for $20. Well, Last week, My wife encouraged me to pick up Dark Vengeance ltd edition and some paint. Who was I to disagree? (after 23 years of marriage, you take advantage of that...) This was a day after buying the x-wing mini game (which is pretty fun too...) I have a battle for skull pass and some orks for WFB as well.

But here's the kicker, I have never actually played a GW game in all these years.
The good news is that the closest store to me (about 2 hours away) has a lot of 40k players, and my goal is to get one game in by the end of the month with at least space marines.

MY big difficulty is in thinking through this game. Just about every game I have played has been skirmish scale, not unit scale.

anyways, hi y'all.

I'm more of your lazy, apathetic type of gamer.

Hi and welcome. I wouldn't worry too much about moving from skirmish games to larger 40k games. What you'll find is that, because 40k games can get quite large, the basics are actually much simpler than skirmish games. Shooting, more or less goes roll to hit, roll to wound, armour save roll. And the game follows a very simple phase system, movement phase, shooting, then close combat/assault. Sure there are lots of different unit types and special rules but you pick these up over time. Like I say, the basics are very simple and you'll be starting with really small 500-750pt games. And if you can get your head round those other games, you'll have no bother with 40k. Good luck
