Just modelling up several squads and wondering something before I glue everything down: is a Plasma Pistol or Powerfist or Combi-weapon really worth the points? Are you better off giving a Sergeant just a bolt gun or bolt pistol/chainsword and saving points for elsewhere in your list? A Plasma Pistol is 15 points, or a whole extra Marine is 16... seems silly to double one Marine's cost when you could double your numbers instead?

Well depends. You really should be running your squads at max size so the argument that the PP is a whole nother marine is moot.

PPs are overpriced. There are times where a combi weapon is well worth it. Fewer times where investing in CC will help.

Most times I just run with a bolter or BP/CCW.

Yeah, I am bulking squads up to 10s, but every 15 PP points saved helps toward another squad, so not entirely moot.

I think Im going to do some surgery on my DV Sergeant and downgrade his pistol. And my younger, more power fist-obsessed self has a lot to answer for. Luckily I now have a ton of spare arms from a couple of eBay bits lots!

You won't be taking enough PPs in your army to pay for a whole new squad. Upgrades are important.

Giving your sergeant a combi-weapon and a power weapon is a good investment. It gives you one round with double the special weapon shots.

The PP is a little more expensive to not lose the weapon after one shot and you get an extra attack in combat. It kills terminators dead, which is a good thing in this edition, and it can threaten vehicles.

I've been happy with my pairs of plasma pistols.
With the plasma guns, it gives me 6 plasma shots at 12", and another 6 on the overwatch.

It's most likely ~10 points over-priced, but I can live with that.
And the Sarg looks cool.

I'm an advocate of combi-weapons to compliment the squad's special weapon.

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

Interesting... so running a combi-melta in a meltagun-toting combat squad is a good option? I happen to have one lurking around...

I go with default, or bolter/fist.
If I don't go with a PF, the serg gets meltabombs.
Either way, getting close to a MC or vehicle, there's a chance they'll hurt it.

Thanks all. I think I'll model up some different stuff by squad, try a few games and see what works best for me.

I use a combi of a weapon that usually gets only one shot anyway and is situational. So, Combi-Flamer or Melta.

Exact same here. I always want the Sgt to have an option against the big fish. Combi is an awesome asset to have but I agree the PP is overpriced. It has pulled me out of a jam way more than once though so its tough to say (like 2nd wave DP dropping a dread right next to the squad)
