Subject: Dark Angel "Plasma Army of Doom"....is it back?

This thread could go in either general or tactics I suppose. If a staffer does not like it's placement, feel free to move it. You have my permission...
Anyway, back a number of years ago (middle of last decade or so) my primary Space Marine was a "Dark Angel Plasma Army of Doom" build. This was an option that was legal under the third edition codex that had the core of the army built around six five man tactical squads armed with a plasma gun and plasma cannon. To this one generally added more firepower units and a couple of counter-assault units to keep the bad guys honest. It was a pretty effective build, especially against the MEQ armies that make up the majority of 40k armies. This build went away when the codex was changed to restrict special and heavy weapons to full ten man squads.
Well, today I got a look at a scan of the new Dark Angels codex (4chan is good for something, I suppose ,aside from just poisoning the mind of children and decreasing the level of civility in online discussion) and it looks like the "Plasma Army of Death" might be back to an extent. Tactical Squads in the new DA codex can have a special or heavy weapon even if they don't number the full ten figures. True enough, it's not as much firepower as the old "special and heavy weapon" varient, but at just 85 points for a bare bones five man squad with a plasma cannon, that's a pretty cheap base of fire, split amongst six small units. Add to this the new reduced cost of Devastor Squads a power armour marine heavy DA can throw down some serious firepower.
I sold my black painted "Heresy Era" Dark Angels a few years back, but this new development might tempt me into repainting them.
Thoughts?

I dont have the codex but i'm pretty sure from what i've read you need a full 10 man tac squad to get the heavy weapon just like C:SM, BA and chaos.
But you can also now add plasma to terminators, and bikes give you some nice options.
I remember plasma spam from 3rd, my necrons hated it but my SW never had an issue as a Rhino loaded with blood claws hitting on 3+ soon cleared any dark angels i faced.

Nope. 5 guys are enough for a special or heavy weapon.
And plasma spam is back with a blast. 10 strong devastator unit with 4 plasma cannons is only 200 points... You can have 18 plasma cannons for 1110 points (3x4 devastator squad plasma cannons and 6x1 tactical squad plasma cannons) and you can add +3 from veteran squads for 315 points. Add 2 Divination Librarians, an ADL, and your 1750 points Plasma Cannon Wall of Doom army is complete (21 plasma cannons per turn can do lots of damage I guess)!

That's incorrect--Dark Angels can, in fact, run 5-man tacticals with heavy weapons.

The Seraphs of Thunder: a homebrew, almost entirely converted successor Deathwing. And also some Orks. And whatever else I have lying around. |

Well, I remember the DA ''plasma-heavy'' armies in the 3rd edition. But there, the plasma cannon shots did bounce. Not sure though, if this kind of army is back as I don't have the full overview yet.

It is in the sense that you can get plasma in nearly every flavor in the skittles bag. Deathwing and Ravenwing have access to more plasma than before including on the new Land Speeder. Not entirely sure if much of it is really cheaper but being able to take a plasma cannon in a 5 man squad? On a +2 armor? 18" twin-linked on a bike?
They certainly have plenty of options to do it.

Ravenwing even have thier own special plasma weapons lol. No longer are the days of silly plasma "guns" or "pistols". Real grim men use plasma talons.
I've only ever liked the Raven/Deathwing and bought the book yesterday on a whim. Seeing how much plasma I can have makes me chuckle and I'd even consider going green even if just to spite a friend of mine who likes to field an awful lot of WG. I think I'll be sticking with Ravenwing though quite honestly.
My BA are annoyed at some of the tank costs. Wish they could have cheap vinds even if they were slow. Or heck even those armed razorbacks would be amusing.

Someone once told me this about Porsche Panameras:
"There are two Panamera's in my hood. Visual pepper spray. When Jesus was on the cross and cried out "Father, why have you forsaken me?" it wasn't because of the whole crucifixion, it was because he foresaw the design of the Porsche Panamera."
You learn something new everyday. |

I was considering 3 Medusa camo-netting with an ADL and dark shroud for a 2+ cover save.

Eh. If what I heard is right, the Plasma Talons are 1 shot twinlinked on the ravenwing, and Plasma is nice, but ADL's being super common, it's not amazing. And they still have a chance of self inflicted death.
They'll mess up any light tank, that's for sure, and be a bitch and a third in most games.
This might make me get an Aegis line, though. hmm.
