I started to paint this Black Legion army almost 20 years ago, painted few models and then reality and life hit me and I left wargaming for few years. Fast forward another few years and I'm painting and playing again. So, I decided to finish this long overdue project... Here is the current state of my small but growing army. I paint models I really like mostly, not bothering with powergaming, list optimisation, etc. Thread will be updated when I will paint something but I'm both slow painter and one with many projects at hand...

Really like your mini's, also your bases are very cool did you make them or buy them?

Your blending of the reds really makes the colour pop as well.

Guys, thanks for your opinion I'm glad You like it.
@Briooh - bases are done by myself, rather easy to do. I have a mix of very fine sand with much much bigger stones used by railroad modellers for making tracks. It is glued on top of the base, with care to not obstruct boots of the miniatures (some of them are glued on thick plasticard, to make them stand "on" the stones, not "amongst" them. Then when the glue is dry everything is painted black, then drybrushed heavily with Red Gore. Final drybrush is done with Blood Red. On some bases, particulary larger ones, there are flat surfaces made from crushed cork tiles - mainly for stable and believable positioning of larger miniatures, like obliterator. They are painted in the same way. Some miniatures are additionally very lightly weathered on boots with pigments.

That obliterator model is disgusting! However your paint job makes it look half decent, which speaks volumes for how good your paint job, loving the rest of models, nice bit of vintage Chaos thrown in for good measure as well.

The subtle free hand here and there is perfect (the knee of the second to last berserker is perfect).

I also like the way you mix colours. The red and blue give personnality to each model without disrupting the whole scheme. Me likes !

@Young Logan - no, they are old metal casts, I have them for over 15 years I think.

I'll admit, I typically see posts about Black Legion and just gloss over because all the black and gold just makes me thing 'meh, generic Chaos.' I have a similar aversion to World Eaters/Khorne, but I won't get into that.

There's definitely a certain something about your paint job on these though, that's making me reconsider my position. Very well done.

Great work.
Am I the only one who thinks that the Berzerker models are starting to show their age?

For an army that is very hard to make look unique, you have done an outstanding job! My persona prejudices aside, this is amazing stuff.

I think they all look great. Good work. Any chance of a quick description of how you achieved that skin tone on the berzerker (the one with the teeth)? Thanks and keep it up

Guys, thanks for your comments, I really appreciate them. It's true Black Legion is the most generic of generic Chaos forces, with almost no variations between painters. THat's the reason I try to break this black/gold duocolor by some strong accents (red helmets of berserkers, yellow freehands), red cabling, etc. I think that highlightning black with Charadon Granite and Shadow Grey helps a little
Yes, berserkers models truly show theirs age. This is especially visible on the legs (definitely the worst part of models), soft details of armour edges and very visible mould lines going through areas open to view. When I paint one of these old berzerkers and next mini is one from the latest plastic moulds, difference is huge.
Grey face of the helmetless berserker was painted with Tallarn Flesh as a base (most my mini's flesh are painted with this color). Then shadows were applied with watered down Hormogaunt Purple. Some additional shadows were painted with Devlan Mud or Agrax Earthsade. All highlights were done with very thin layers of fortress grey.

Wow, those White Scars are fantastic, love the contrast to the black (I mostly see them done in blue base with a white layer), and I adore your BT sergeant, how did you do the legs?

Legs? Black is Vallejo Negro Black airbrushed on, there are zenithal highlights airbrushed too. Edges are done with Codex Grey then highlighted with Fortress Grey and some places additionally with small amount of white. Steel eagle is done with Vallejo Oily Steel (dark metallic colour, much darker then Boltgun Metal), then Boltgun was painted on. Washed with dark brown wash, boltgun again, washed with dilluted black wash, edges highlighted with Mithril Silver.

All the models look great especially the Black Legion well done.

I absolutely loved looking through those pictures, I started collecting 15 years ago and some of those models were some of my first minis....... Painted a lot worse than yours are.

I fondly remember my chaos army, loads of veterans and a squad of heavies at the back. All with BS5 (veterans). The joys of no force organisation charts!!!
