With my painting having tailed off towards the end of last year, I figured it was time to get the monkey off my back and paint on some models. I've kicked off a new Tale of Warmahordes over on the Privateer Press forums, but that isn't the only thing I have to work on this year. Thanks to Kickstarters, I have an army of Orcs for Kings of War, at least one set of Sedition Wars models and multiple seasons of figures for Dreadball coming my way.

2013 could mean I have to get busy.

But to start things off, I thought I had best collate the many WIP figures I have lying around the place for Warmahordes...

The Milk Tray Lid of WIP Shame

Apparently I get distracted from finishing models easily.

Let me explain that remark - as I said this morning, I've gone around my flat and gathered up all the WIP WMH models that had progressed beyond mere undercoat, but had yet to be completed. I had thought the lid of the box of Milk Tray chocolates I'd been given for Christmas would be a suitable temporary transport device. Imagine my dismay when I found that they wouldn't all fit inside it...

Time for a quick roll call...

I think I should try to make a bit of a dent in that before I start on anything else. Looking at the state of the models, I think I want to get some easy wins on the board to get a solid base in position. As a result, I think I'll be starting with Herne & Jonne, pButcher and the Longgunner unit (which has been WIP since early 2010, IIRC).

Automatically Appended Next Post:
OK, let's get some proper WIP shots in of the models I've pulled out of the Box of Shame to work on this month.

Herne & Jonne

These guys probably have the least amount of work required - need to redo lenses, add Jonne's axe & Herne's pistol (when I can figure out where it goes) and pick out details I've missed on both of them.

Original pButcher

Crazy man... again, not masses to do on here. Shade his trousers and the red armour, then it should mostly be working on his coat and gun.

Long Gunner Infantry

These guys are going to be a drag - the models as just so uninspiring! I think I'll break them down into two groups of three and a four, and try and crank them out, but I know I'm not going to enjoy the experience :(

Outside of the stuff for WMH, I also have the statue from the Garden of Morr set which is WIP, but I need to get around to taking a picture of it. It mostly needs the vines and roses shading (and I need to make sure I've picked up all the blooms), then all the skulls picking out as skulls.

By the way, is it just me or is there at least one rose on the final model which doesn't show up on the pictures GW show on their website? I'll point out the one I mean when I get pictures.

I've gotten a little work done on Herne and Jonne - I've figured out how their weapons are meant to attach, and have removed & cleaned them after being on the sprue. The weapons have had a rough undercoat on the site that won't attach to the model, which I'll tidy up one the weapons are glued on. I've also repainted the flesh on Herne's arms to be flesh, rather than a poor attempt at cloth, and re-basecoated any lenses with Cygnar Blue Highlight.

Not enough to merit a photo, but I saw no harm in a report - will try and glue the weapons to H&J this morning.

I've also managed to grab a picture of my WIP Garden of Morr statue, shown below:

If you zoom in on that, you'll see the bits of detail on the flowers I haven't hit yet, particularly around the bottom red bloom. I'll certainly be picking out the two flowers I didn't previously, but I'm not sure what the bit stretching along the face of the step is meant to be.

Hopefully I'll get chance to finish the flower/vine work on this this week, then I'm pretty much down to skulls - lots and lots of skulls. I'm also hoping to start basecoating a rank of five Ironbreakers, which are currently just undercoated with brown bases - as I need to do some basic metal work on Herne and Jonne, and the Butcher, I may as well hit them as well while the paint is out.

Progress - hmm...

Well, I haven't gotten any work done on the statue yet, mainly because it has stayed in my photo set-up since I last used it (6 days? Really?)

I will point out that I lost the weekend to helping run the L5R Ruby Championships, but I'm sure people won't let something like that slide...

I have gotten some work done in other areas, though. The Ironbreakers have had a heavy wetbrush of Boltgun Metal, followed by a wash of Nuln Oil. The armour now needs a highlight drybrush of Chainmail - it is gromril, after all - then I can get to work on other colours, such as gold and beards.

I've also painted the metal panels on the bottom of the Butcher's coat - they had the same Boltgun / Nuln Oil colours used as the Ironbreakers. The blunderbuss wood furniture has also had a quick basecoat of Umbral Umber.

Herne & Jonne have had the most done - they had their weapons undercoated and attached. The metal on the weapons has also been done (see above), and I've picked out the pistol holster as well as some pouches and straps with P3 Bootstrap Leather. I've touched up Herne's trousers with VGC Sombre Grey - which makes for a reasonable single colour denim - and basecoated the haft of Jonne's axe with Umbral Umber.

On the downside, my copy of Sedition Wars turned up today. Why the downside, you might ask - well, with it, SDE and Dreadball, that's a lot of board game models to paint

If I carry on talking to myself like this, rumours are going to start...

Well, I've finished the Butcher of Khardov and Herne & Jonne, so I suppose I should lead with their pictures...

The Butcher of Khardov

Herne & Jonne

I've also gotten more work done on the Ironbreakers. They had a light drybrush of Chainmail over the areas of the armour I thought would be gromril. I then went back in and picked out areas which would be gold with Chainmail. Three coats of Seraphim Sepia later, and I think the gold is done...

Next step will be hair/beards, weapon hafts and other details - I need to check a reference photo, as I'm sure these guys will have gems all over.

For a WMH painting perspective, I've lifted out six of those Long Gunners, with a hope of getting them done by he end of Thursday - we'll see how that goes...

You sound like me. Plenty of half finished models. Mine are a mix of in box, primed, and half done. I think I'd need about four of those box lids you've got. >_<

I'll be watching this as you work through your mass. I'm not much of a terrain person but the Garden of Morr statue is really awesome. I'm eager to see that one done.

Good luck and happy painting!

Thanks for the comments - glad you like the Butcher, peebs, and I need to get back to that statue, bunnygurl.

I'm concentrating on finishing off that rank of Ironbreakers at the minute, and I don't think I'm that far off now:

As you can see, the beards are in there. I've gone for a mix of colours, ending up with two grey beards, a blonde, an auburn and a brown. I think the rings in the bears of the guys at each end need one more coat of Seraphim Sepia on the gold, then that bit will be done. Not sure yet if more work is needed on the beards themselves, but I'll revisit that before I finish.

I've also plucked another model from the Lid of Shame to work on - and it's now a pirate's life for me...

Captain Phinneus Shae

I've basecoated the areas I want to be gold with Chainmail, and picked out a couple of plates with P3 Coal Black. I'll be building up the gold next, as well as getting the edging and lining of his coat done.

Captain Phinneus Shae

Gotten a bit more done on Shae than I expected - the gold is pretty much done, and I've basecoated & washed the steel. I've basecoated the coat lining and edging with P3 Beast Hide - it needs a wash with Devlan Mud, but that can wait until after I've painted his gloves with P3 Bootstrap Leather, to save breaking the wash out twice. I also still need to bust out the Thamar Black to touch up the gun barrel & exhaust - which will also allow me to finish off the five Ironbreakers, once I glue the shields on them.

Well, the Ironbreakers are now completed, with shields attached:

Still don't have any basic troops painted to this new standard, though I think I've found the box with my old Dwarf army in, which could be interesting.

For my next non-Warmachine or Hordes model, I've gone back to working on the statue from the Garden of Morr:

I finished picking out the detail in the roses on the bottom step, then washed all the blooms with Baal Red, while the vines and leaves got washed with Thraka Green. Once that was all dry, I came back with some carefully applied Devlan Mud to add shadows.

All the skulls which are to be bone have now had two thin coats of P3 Gun Corps Brown applied, and are now ready for a layer of P3 Jack Bone. With that out of the way, the Devlan Mud will be out again to shade the skulls, by which stage it'll probably be time for another WIP shot.

Finally, our resident Pirate warcaster, Captain Phinneus Shae, has had some more work done on him, and is about one update from completion.

I've picked out the buttons on his coat with my usual gold technique, shaded the brown areas and sash with Devlan Mud, and tried my hand at shading his coat with a mix of P3 Coal Black and P3 Greatcoat Grey - not too convinced by the latter, but I've tried. Just need to sort out his face and hair, and he'll be completed as well.

Time for some more completed stuff - two of which you've seen as WIPs, and one which I was able to polish off over the last weekend whilst watching the Six Nations rugby.

Mercenaries - Warcaster - Captain Phinneus Shae

Khador - Solo - Manhunter - 2 points

I quite like the basing I ended up with on the Manhunter - broken twig for the tree trunk, and Woodland Scenics Snow + PVA glue for the snow.

Garden of Morr Statue

The skulls were fairly quick to do here - after the initial coat(s) of Gun Corps Brown, then got a reasonably heavy drybrush of P3 Jack Bone, then a thorough Devlan Mud wash. Once the wash had dried, I went back with some more Devlan Mud to touch up certain recesses, such as above the eyes on the skulls in the plinth.

So, what am I working on now? Well, PP's Stannis Brocker is back on the tray, alongside the Black 13th and an Argus. I think I'm going to see if I can get Stannis done this month, to go with Shae and the Manhunter in my A Tale of WMH 2013 submission.

On the non-PP front, I'm preparing some Britanan troops for Tor Gaming's Relics, but I might segue onto the Mantic Enforcer Captain or some Tallarn Imperial Guard before I undercoat the Britanans. I also want to figure out which bit of the Garden of Morr to work on next - I'm currently thinking the wall sections, but I'm not sure yet.

Assuming I'm not talking to myself, I should be back with some more WIP pics by the end of the week.

Mad as a March Hare

It looks like I am talking to myself, after all. Time for a quick WIP update...

A new month means more models being retrieved from the Milk Tray Lid of WIP Shame for further work - as I've only managed to complete five points in the two months so far, I need to start playing catch-up if I'm going to hit at least 50 points this year.

So, who are our lucky contestants this month?

Stannis Brocker - everyone's favourite Steelhead Cavalry Commander.

An Argus - because the Gorax and Feral were feeling lonely.

General Adept Nemo - because the Weatherman says it's raining...

The Black 13th - because sometimes fun-size is just what you want.

I've also made my mind up on which non-PP models I'm working on next.

Mantic - Enforcer Captain - very early stages, as I've basecoated areas I know I'm going to want as steel with Boltgun Metal.

Imperial Guard - 5 Tallarn Infantry - because you can never have too many grunts

Imperial Guard - Captain Al'Rahem - with an updated plasma pistol.

Both lots of Imperial Guard were started back at Derby World Wargames 2011, which is when I painted their bases. They've been sat on a shelf since then, waiting for me to get around to them. Given I'm on a finish-the-WIP kick at the moment, it seemed as good a time as any.

Nice mix of models you have on-the-go. I find painting goes much faster when I don't try and finish each mini before starting the next - I'm assuming from your list that you're the same! The manhunter looks really good, a bit of extra attention on bases does make a big difference. I often find the base is a bit of an afterthought but I really should put more time into making them a bit more interesting.

Thanks peebs - I do find that having a selection helps me avoid burnout, even though there may be substantial differences in aesthetics within a range.

I've gotten some work done on the Black 13th over the last couple of days - leathers, grey on the trousers and gloves, and initial steels:

They're driving me a little crazy due to how tiny they are - I do wish that PP had scaled them up to fit with the rest of the range before releasing them :(

While tidying my living room, I also took some almost-whole army shots of my Minions. It is surprising how tricky it is to get a decent shot of the full army - anyone got any tips?

The Not-so-fun-sized 13th

I can't make up my mind which is the bigger sadist - the sculptor of these figures, or the person who OK'd them for production.

Tiny figures, with lots of detail:

Need to decided what colour I'm doing tricorn-boy's shoulder plates (currently leaning towards blue), shade the yellow with Seraphim Sepia (currently just one coat of Moldy Ochre) and highlight it with Cygnus Yellow, pick out and wash the gold areas, probably was the coats/trousers/gloves/boots with Nuln Oil, and pick out any buckles with Boltgun Metal. So lots to do on these tiny, tiny figures.

Grr.

At the other extreme, I've done a little easy work on the Argus, adding the colour to the armour plates:

The green needs a wash of Thraka Green, then I need to go back and pick out the Chainmail areas again ready to wash them into gold. Also need to work on the fur and the faces, and highlight the main body.

Stannis hadn't had enough done on him to warrant a photo, but he is progressing.

There's been some progress on the Tallarn front as well.

Firstly, you may have noticed there are a few more dudes here than there were before - I decided it was just as easy to paint ten grunts as five, so got the other WIP guys off the shelf and got them to the same stage. I've been through and made sure that all the flesh was washed with either Ogryn Flesh or Reikland Fleshshade, and painted the strapping on their boots and weapons with VMC Flat Brown. Any shoulder pads got a layer of P3 Greatcoat Grey, and the headscarves were painted with a mix of VMC Basalt Grey and Pale Grey-Blue.

Next step will be the tunics, with a mix of Basalt Grey, Pale Grey-Blue and Oxford Blue, so it has a darker, bluer tint. The tunics and headscarves will then get a wash of a Nuln Oil/Asurmen Blue mix, before I can start on leathers, etc.

I've managed to finish off two more selections from the Milk Tray Box Lid of WIP Shame, and I'm still working on two more...

Cygnar - Unit - Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team - 4 points

Circle of Orboros - Warbeast - Argus - 4 points

While I'm thinking about it, here's a quick progress shot on eNemo:

I'm working on the glowing bits and the minute, along with his hair. I've just completed the shading on both, so next step is to bring the coils back up a bit, and turn his hair even whiter. Will probably pick out his goggles at the same time.

I haven't gotten any further with Stannis, the Enforcer Captain or the Tallarn unit yet, but hopefully there'll be some more progress the next time I post.

I had been hoping to post the finished version of eNemo today, but then I realised as I set him up to take pictures that I hadn't painted the lenses on his goggles. He might get them done over the weekend.

This week I've mostly been working on a new project, who isn't from the Milk Tray Lid - in this case, the Mercenary character warjack, Rocinante. Randomly, he's the only character warjack in the faction of characters...

I'm sticking fairly closely to the studio colour scheme, hence the metallics. I'm thinking the gold needs another wash of Seraphim Sepia, and I still need to wash the steel with Nuln Oil, but he's off to a good start.

Time for a few WIP shots. Unfortunately, I didn't get too far with the Riflemen, what with getting distracted by World of Tanks for most of the weekend...

Rocinante is proceeding apace - need to highlight the hull armour, in line with the method given by Meg in the "Ask the Studio" thread.

I've extracted Captain Damiano from the tray to work on, and parts of his armour and quilting were basecoated at the same time as the Riflemen and Rocinante. I think steel shall be next on the Riflemen and Damiano.

In addition to the PP stuff, I've been working on a small Hasslefree model - Stormtrooper Kev, from the Dress-a-Kev line. Going for the urban look, I think, though the base might not tie in with it.

I've also finished the goggles I missed on General Adept Nemo, so he is completely done - for now, at least.

Thanks, Cutthroatcure - what did you have in mind by a "check" system?

I've finished Rocinante off now as well, giving me 9 points and a warcaster for the Tale of WMH I'm running over on the Privateer Press forums.

Damiano and the Steelhead Riflemen are progressing, and I'll try to grab some updated WIP shots after my next painting session.

One thing I forgot to mention last time I posted here was that I've recently posted a new review to my blog site, taking a look at the Forge World Dwarf Command set I picked up at the Open Day at the start of the month.

Looks like I've let things slip a bit in there - well, understandable, as my desire to paint dried up a bit during May. I did still manage to finish off a warjack, though, so I'm still OK for A Tale of WMH 2013:

Khador - Warjack - Kodiak Heavy Warjack

It might not be immediately obvious, but I tried to repose the kit so that it appears to be doing a shoulder block for a slam power attack - not too sure how that came out, as I keep wondering if it looks like it is tripping up *shrug*

I'm still working on the Steelhead Riflemen and Damiano, though looking at that last WIP shot there isn't a huge amount of progress to be shown - all the steel has been basecoated, and three of the Riflemen have gained blonde hair, as I was giving Magus Damien Sperling the same colour hair, shown below:

IKRPG - Magus Damien Sperling

Once I've glued a set of arms back on, I'm hoping to finish off my unit of Slaughterhousers - I'll try to get some WIP shots once I've done a bit more work on them.

I've just undercoated a batch of figures to get some work done on this month - eBaldue, eHaley, original pIrusk, a Shredder, the Stone Keeper UA, the Dwarf Runelord with a Staff, and the metal Gabe MVP from DreadBall season 2 - give me a bit of a mix for June.

What else have I been up to since my last post? Well, I ran our X-Wing Regionals on May 4th, attended the Mantic Open Day on May 11th and went to Triples on the 18th & 19th - need to finish my blog post on the latter off.

Time for a quick update to show (most of) what I'm working on this month...

L-R: Kommander Strakhov, a sample blonde Steelhead Rifleman, Captain Damiano

L-R: eBaldur, eHaley, Stone Keeper UA, original Escalation Kommandant Irusk

L-R: GW Dwarf Runelord, Mantic Dreadball MVP Gabe (Penny Arcade tie-in)

I'm currently thinking of painting Gabe so his kit fits in roughly with the colours Gabe's character normally wears in the web-comic - a denim blue for trousers, yellow upper armour, with black chest symbol and black hair. Could look decent if done right.

Kommandant Irusk is coming along nicely, though I keep getting struck by how much he resembles M.Bison from Street Fighter...

The rest of this new group, who are also making progress, though not at the same rate as Kommandant Bison. the Steelhead Riflemen have also had their steel washed with Nuln Oil. I think the next step for everyone is to apply the Chainmail basecoat for the gold on everyone.

The Runelord is also progressing quickly - the character squad for this army grows once more...

Gabe is progressing, but not fast enough to earn a photo - mainly because I was reviewing Penny Arcade to make sure I get the colour palette correct. I've determined the forearms should be orange, while the shoes/boots would be red and white.

Thanks peebs - I wasn't 100% convinced by the figure until I got him out of the blister pack, but he's been enjoyable to paint thus far. This may change when I start trying to paint large gems and glowy bits, mind you

I was up till 1:30am this morning supporting an IT deployment for work, so managed to build up the gold with washes on this group of warcasters - in Strakhov's case, it was the chevrons on his armour and the gun casing, the rest being from earlier work. I think to get the gold to this stage took three coats.

I think my next step is to bust out the Coal Black, for the Stone Keeper's robes and some detail work on Strakhov - I need a bit of a run up before I'll tackle the gold on Damiano.

The Runelord has also had his gold sorted, though he's a layer of wash behind the three PP figures - not sure if I'm happy with his gold yet, or if he'll get the final layer.

Other bits to do include his pipe and other accoutrements, and deciding just how light I want his beard to end up being. Still, he is coming along rather nicely.

I think the best way of describing my progress since my last update would be "bitty" - I've managed to get lots of bits done, without making too much progress on any one model.

Oh, and the Stone Keeper's staff arm broke off for a second time, so has been reattached with some Green Stuff in the join, to see if that will hold it better than just glue alone.

Boyz n the Wood

eBaldur has had his under-robe painted, starting with Umbral Umber and working up to Battlefield Brown. I'm considering a further highlight of Battlefield Brown & Gun Corps Brown, but will leave him as is for now. The handle of his sword was painted with Bootstrap Leather, then washed twice with Devlan Mud. Finally, his belt was painted with two coats of Sanguine Base.

Apart from having his staff arm reattached, the Stone Keeper's robe was basecoated with Coal Black, then washed with Nuln Oil. I think my next step will be to base the bits of armour which will be green & gold, then start working on his gold areas.

In Mother Khador, the miniature paints you

Irusk was tidied up where I had been a little messy with the paint, particularly around the studs on the black background. The armour plates leading down onto his puches were painted with VMC German Grey, as was the handle of his sword, while his boots were painted with Umbral Umber. I also tried to introduce a little shading to his armour with thinned Sanguine Base - I think he is pretty much done, but want to give it a couple of days before making a final decision.

Strakhov had his gloves and back-of-the-head armour painted with Coal Black, while his belt and large pouches were painted with Bootstrap Leather and washed with Devlan Mud. His hair got a coat of Bastion Grey, which was washed with Nuln Oil. The grenades on his back were painted with Cryx Bane Base, which is a quite nice dull green colour.

Barbershop quartet

I've been experimenting with hair colour on the Steelhead Riflemen, and now I've just got three more to do. The four in this picture show the approaches I'm using thus far:

- VMC German Grey, washed with Nuln Oil
- VMC Flat Brown, washed with Devlan Mud
- P3 Bastion Grey, washed with Nuln Oil (Leader only)
- P3 Moldy Ochre, washed with thinned Bootstrap Leather

I'm pretty happy with these four schemes, and just need to make up my mind what to do with the last three guys.

I've done some work on him, so here's the updated WIP of the Stone Keeper, where I think the green & gold has really fetched him to life:

The green was VMC Flat Green, washed with Thraka Green, and caught in the Sepia overspill. The gold was my usual techniqu, starting from Chainmail - some bits might warrant another coat to darken the recesses, but we'll see.

Need to highlight the stone (probably Trollblood Highlight) and paint the runes (Wurm Green, at a guess), then figure out the best way of doing that big gem.

I've declared pIrusk complete, so at least I know I've hit my minimum for this month - now to press on with some of the other stuff...
