Just curious...
We hear a constant tyrade of angst about new codices being either too powerful for cost, or too weak for the game... And miscellanious other complaints...
Personally, I absolutely, freakin' LOVE the new Dark Angel codex... And that is saying a LOT...
It's not the next generation of Codex Creep that we all know and love to hate...
It's not ho-hum... It is rather thorough, even giving us new info from ancient days (and some recent)... And the artwork is spectacular...
I will say that the Vengeance speeder is wonky... But the rules for it are tight, so I'm going to have to find some way to modify the turret cupola, and put the gunner back beside the driver... May not be as weird looking in person, but the 2d looks odd... It may be a balance issue, and they figured that they needed mass up on the nose to offset the big honkin' cannon assembly on the back... But it's still wonky looking.
All in all, I love the book... Call me "fanboy" if you will, but this one's good... I don't say that about everything... I hold a healthy disdain for the Blood Angel and Grey Knight codices, and an outright hatred for the Necron dex and the bizarre brotherhood that they now share with every living thing except the Eldar and Tyranids (grumble-grumble, dey derk ehr jerbs!!!).
Anyway, what does the galaxy at large think of the Dark Angels return to the lime-light?

Well seeing as I got to take my first and favorite army back off the shelf and kick ass 14 to 4. I love the new Dex, and I'm looking forward to trying the new stuff out.
It has however ruffled the feathers of all three chaos players in my group, but whatever I would put the codexs on about the same power lvl.
I have to say though, the deathwing knights did a lot better the. I thought they were going to.

I'm just starting the hobby and only own the 4e DA codex, so I can't really say if I like it fully or not. I do like having a kit, other than Azrael, that comes with a Watcher in the Dark. I also like having Scouts as troops instead of elites, since now I own three troop choices (1 Scout Squad, 2 Tactical Squads).
Only complaint is, from what I know, I still can't use Seraphicus as Seraphicus since the Litanies of the Dark Angels special rule isn't in the new codex. No big deal but meh.

That's what really got me excited... It's just well done... And if this trend continues, then everything is going to be happy dances... Well, the WAACers may not happy dance, but who cares!!!

I think the CSM book is severely lacking. If Grey Knights are the anti-daemons, then DA seem to be the anti- CSM. This is appropriate lore wise, but in terms of gameplay I feel that it could potentially do way too well against CSM players. I know my CSM friend is disappointed by the new CSM dex, as am I, and the fact that my book is partially designed to take a poop on his makes it like salt in the wound I guess...
Straying from that note, I believe that this codex is a very well made codex and nothing seems to be incredibly overpowered and everything is worth taking (except the blade of Caliban, but that's another thread). There are plenty of fluff options and plenty of 'gamey' options, but both seem to balance well together. What I mean by that is that many of the 'cool' or 'fluffy' weapons or upgrades do seem to be worth taking in a competitive environment as well. In particular, this works when combining certain characters and weapons/upgrades together, which is something that I think gives this book a very unique flare.
Which is another thing I loved; the fact that Dark Angels feel DIFFERENT. They were pretty stale and bland in the 4th edition book and it always seemed like there was a little something missing to make them more distinguished. Now with their new Deathwing and Ravenwing units, revamped heroes and organization etc and introduction of some very flavorful and cool relics, banners and upgrades they have a distinct flavor that rivals that of Space Wolves and Blood Angels, instead of basically being vanilla marines with more bikes and terminators.
In terms of codex power, I don't think this book will be too overpowered. I'm sure there is some cheesiness to be had, and there are certainly some very powerful one-two punch combinations in this codex that could put a sever hurting on some of the more powerful codexes of the day (rad/stasis grenades coupled with power fists, mauls, and plasma guns come to mind). In addition, things like Ezekiel's mind worm can effectively turn those big scary close combat monsters into a potato with a sword (or whatever weapon they have) which is a tremendously Dark Angel way to go about slaying the foe. There's very few things that are supremely powerful toe-to-toe in this book, but combining the powers of the army can make your army incredibly powerful. This makes the game more interesting, adds depth to the strategies, and makes you and your opponent think more, which I think reflects the Dark Angel style of fighting well.
Sorry to sort of hijack the thread. I too am pretty excited about the book. Glad to see my Angels return to the tabletop to kick some heiny!

I actually logged on to Dakka right now to see whether a thread like this is running yet or I'd have to start one.
I think this is the best Codex since Orks back in... 2007? It has all sorts of options, drips character, and seemingly has unprecedented internal balance with the LS Vengeance being the only true stinker in the book.
I have been writing army lists since Saturday and there is so much cool stuff to take that I might have to build a new army or two.

From the looks it has.
Originality: Good, new units and artifacts.
Power: Decent costs, nothings overpowered
Internal Codex Costs: There's a few iffy things (The flyers, maybe the landspeeders) but most of the main things are fine.
So in short..It's everything the Chaos Codex wanted to be, except it's got cooler things.

I'm a chaos player and I love it, its fluffy and full of personalization that makes it more than just "Double grim dark space mans" I also liked the CSM dex and I feel like people were expecting way to much from it, were in reality if this is the trend for codexs we should all have a lot less to gripe about. I didnt find them to overpowered against my CSMs either the on;y game Ive played against them was Deathwing and I won something like 15 to 1 in crusade. Over all they got the fixes they needed and the customization they deserved without being GK or Necrons overpowered. Thats my take anyhow, BTW that artifact mace is a boss and should be wholesomely avoided by CSMs lol.

DA's are definately a solid all-round book, just like the new CSM's.
The big difference being that DA's are the more forgiving army to use, so a new or less skilled player will find it easier to game with, (mainly due to how forgiving loyalist marines are in general with rules like ATSKNF + Combat Squads), than they will with the more specialised CSM's.
Overall though, the difference in power level between the two books is similar to say the difference between the new 8th ed Fantasy books.
And really, let's be honest, the main people complaing about the CSM codex were simply living in a fantasy world if they seriously thought we'd see a return of crap like Cult Termies, special snowflake rules per Legion et all...
You can make a perfectly passible Legion army as it stands, and the only real limits are purely self-imposed.

The fact that you bring this up in nearly every thread, seems to indicate that you have some serious grudge against CSM. Most of the things players wanted was not unreasonable for CSM at all.

We've got special snowflake terminators now for..Grey Knights (Paladins), and DA (Terminator Knights), yet we cannot have Cult terminators?
Also, tell me how to give my Slaanesh lord a sonic weapon. Go on, I'll wait
I propose we give special snowflakes options to everyone! Eldar Craftworlds, and Ork Clans would be a nice return since they lost them too.

I have to agree with the Cult of Terminosity... CSM should have the ability to have cult terminators... Fact is, there should have been variations between the legions... They had them up until the attrocity that was the last CSM dex... But then again, I disagree with being able to field every CSM faction at the same time... Or Ork klan, for that matter... If they could gather like that, there is no reason why they wouldn't have already destroyed everything... Ever...
So, there should be terminators from each Legion... Post hoc ergo propter hoc: Cult Terminators...
