Guard Heavy Weapon Crewman

Halmstad, Sweden

Hey all!
This is what I've been working on and off for the last year, painting quality varies quite a bit due to the long time during which I painted them and I'll post them roughly in the order they were painted. Comments and critisism would be appreciated.
Here is the army list that I'll use:

HQ:
CCS 90pts
Camo Cloaks
Autocannon
Sniper Rifle x2

TROOPS:
INFANTRY PLATOON 1:
PCS 45pts
Flamer x3

Infantry Squad x2 150pts
Plasma Gun x2
Plasma Pistol x2

INFANTRY PLATOON 2:
PCS 50pts
Lascannon

Infantry Squad x2 160pts
Lascannon x2
Melta Gun x2

Army shot:

Infantry Squad Purple w/ plasma pistol and plasma gunner: ( I decided to colour-mark my squads so every squad and sergeant have got it's own colour).

Infantry Squad Yellow w/ plasma pistol and plasma gunner:
(The sergeants of squads yellow and purple were painted long after the squads themselves as I wanted different weapons.)

Platoon Command Squad White w/ 3 flamers:

Infantry Squad Red w/ a lascannon and melta gunner:

Infantry Squad Green w/ a lascannon and melta gunner:

Platoon Command Squad Black w/ a lascannon:

Company Command Squad w/ Snipers, camo cloaks and an autocannon/ anti-materiel rifle:

And as a bonus; A non-legal Scout Sentinel that I painted just for fun:

I apologize for the fact that some of the pics are a bit blurry but after spending 20 minutes in -5 degrees C with hands and legs going numb you just don't care about picture quality anymore.

They look really good. Seems also to be a fun build to play .

I like the idea of squad markings via base color. I will use that in the future.

I really like the colouring and the actual paint quality all works really well together

I disagree with this just because the bright bases look a bit out of place, i think it would look better on say shoulder pads etc than the bases. The idea is clever, im just not a fan

Hope you add more to this army it deserves some more love

Amazing looking force you have there, I like the contrast on the bases against the armor.

Stunning work! One of the best IG army's I have seen in a while!

Not a fan of the multi-color bases although I see the reason. Perhaps a different method...

Pick two colors IE grey, and black as an example. Now one platoon's bases will be rimmed in grey, another black. Another grey around the top, and black, around the bottom, another black around the top, and grey around the bottom.

One with grey vertical lines, one with black vertical lines. etc. Pattern variations in the two colors will separate the platoons without distracting the eye.

nice work. you have some very characterful conversions in here. really love the entire CCS. not a huge fan of the brightly colored bases, but I understand what you're going for with them. my preference would be some sort of squad marking on the armor and a consistent color for the bases, so it makes the army as a whole a bit more cohesive. I look forward to seeing more units added to this army

When it comes to the bases i've been thinking about changing their left shoulder pads instead as I feel that would fit in better with the whole "squad leader gets a different colour" thing. The only issue is that I'm waaaay to lazy to actually do it.

I don't have more of some of the parts so I can't do a picture tutorial but I'll explain as good as I can:

First the arm, stock and back end of the anti-materiel rifle/autocannon comes from the Cadian Command Squad plasma gun, I just cut it off by the plasma coil (I think that's the word for it at least) and removed the markings on the shoulders.
Then the autocannon itself is the sentinel one that I cut off right at the magazine and removed the sight it had.
The scope is from a space marine bolter and I think the bipod comes from the scout sniper box but I'm not 100% sure.
And lastly the magazine which is just a bit of an antenna from the sentinel.

I also got another squad painted up a couple of weeks ago that I might as well post.

Wow the conversions in these are awesome, especially the heavy weapons teams, and in particular the one that looks like he's trying to read the instructions on lascannon assembly in the middle of a battle.

It's a pretty radical change from most armies which are modeled to look all heroic/epic/righteous; these guys all look like they're barely hanging on, which is probably a more accurate representation of most guard battles.

I REALLY love some of these conversions and painting.

I don't know, the fact everyone looks like they are trying not to die/covered in blood/desperately fighting or a combo of the three looks much more realistic as to what a Guard regiment in battle might look like haha

Also, sleeveless in (what looks to be) a really really cold environment just screams bad-ass

The set ups you have on your models are great. The biggest flaw that jumped out at me was the plasma gunner in squad purple. No offense, but that source lighting is awful. If I were you I'd go back to that figure and try again following a tutorial. You did it best with the plasma guns in squad green. Those look good. Also, the blood looks too bright in some places

This is a great army. I think that your shading and weathering are phenomenal. You have a really skilled grasp of painting techniques that continue to elude me.

I'm not sure about the squad-based coloration. I understand the desire to be able to tell your squads apart at a glance, but I think you might get a better result if you went with more subtle colors. The bright reds, yellows, and purples are really jarring. (I went back and double checked before posting just to make sure these weren't supposed to be IG fallen to Slaanesh ) I also mark my squads for easy reference, but I think that you might be more pleased if your markings were easier for the eye to slide off of. You could even stick with the same idea (colored sergeants and bases) if you wanted to go with more understated colors (like navy blue, olive drab, black, white, or shades of grey or brown). I think you might even be able to sell the brighter, more vibrant colors if you only used them on the base rims instead of on the sergeants. Thematically, the IG have a very realistic military feel to them, and the bright colors across broad portions of the uniform to signify rank kind of goes against that. The bold, heraldric feel of such coloration normally fits better with Space Marines or Sisters of Battle. (Or Orks, come to think of it...)

Don't get me wrong, these are great figures! To be honest, if I hadn't had the one issue (the colors) I would have blown off this post as commission quality work that someone was trying to pretend was done by an amateur. Really good stuff here. Good luck, and I hope I was able to be some kind of a help.

I'd say that pretty much the entirety of squad purple is quite awful. Except for the squad leader which was painted later, they all lack shadows and the highlights are choppy at best. I've chosen to leave them as they are though and "replace" them with squad blue instead. I prefer to it that way as I like to see how my painting have improved overtime by comparing old to new models.
