So, I am seriously considering getting into Infinity. I like the background, I like the cyberpunk/anime aesthetic, and I really like a lot of the models. The fact that it is a comparatively cheap game doesn't hurt either. Plus, my girlfriend (who plays CA) has been nudging me to get involved as well.

So, looking at the various factions that interest me, which of the three do you think would be best for a beginning player?

-Ariadna (All the models look great, and I like the fact that they're underdogs with 20th/21st century tech).
-Toha (fitting archenemies of the CA, though I realize they're still new)
-Aleph (I really like the Myrmidons, Posthumans and Ajax)

Thanks.

behind you!

All three of the options you mentioned are great. Unlike other games there is no 'best' faction the balance here is amazing with every faction able to pull off the same combos, dirty tricks, tactica.

Ariadna is good in the sense that the play can be very straight forward, but don't let that fool you they have some great tricks up their sleeve '(underdog)' is a very loose term i feel!.

Tohaa have a limited amount of models right now (since they are so new), but are extremly verstaile in their play due to the Tohaa Fireteam rule. If you are just starting out this is great faction to begin playing, it brings to light the fire team rules (which every faction has although some may do it differently), and the faction will grow with you as you get further into the game.

Aleph is great but many models have lots of rules which for a beginner, can be difficult to master. Their new Sectorial is pretty straight forward and very aggressive in play, which is due to the large number of impetuous models. They have great tech, but this comes at a high cost in many cases which means lower model count, and less models means less actions.

Ultimately though go with what you like, the faction balance like I said is amazing, the game is extremely fun to play and very cinematic in its feel (don't forget to make laser sounds as you shoot the enemy, or gurgle you models last breath when he gets shot in the face!). That being said it is a VERY bloody game, more so then 40k or war/hordes. Guys die, don't get attached to them and even your most basic troop can be the Rambo of the game!

My main 40k armies are Dark Eldar and Sisters of Battle. Overall, I tend to prefer armies that are mobile and hard-hitting.

My suggestion would be to go Aleph. You stated that you really like the models, and your 40k playstyle would also suit them.

Usualy the best bet with any miniature game is to collect an army that you like the looks of, not necessarily what's best. When you tend to like the models more it really shows in the paintjob and your playstyle and attitude towards the game is also affected. So go with what you like the looks of, and worry about the meta-game for your second army

This might also be helpful in transitioning from 40k to Infinity:

http://wargamingtrader.com/infinity/intro2

And the various factions:

http://wargamingtrader.com/infinity/intro1

It's actually pretty common for players to have multiple factions in this game. Since building an army is cheap, soon you'll end up with two or more factions.

So if I were you:

1) I'd play Aleph first since you'll need fewer models compared to Ariadna (and with the list above, it's not that hard to comprehend).

2) You may also want to buy the Post Humans just for the hell of it if you really love the models. Their rules are a tad bit complicated, though, so may want to not use them for the time being. Then purchase a bit of stuff so you can field a generic Aleph force and not a sectorial. That way you'll have "two" armies.

3) Go Ariadna afterwards.

Now, let's make an Easy to go Ariadna list. Just 200pts.
Ariadna is particulary effective at 200pts battles.

Hence why I'm so torn on all three- they're the ones I like the look of the most. If I were to rank them in terms of which models I would like the most, it would probably be Ariadna, then Aleph (mainly because of Myrmidons + Ajax), then Tohaa. Tohaa, I'm willing to wait a bit on because they're still a developing army, but I really like the look of the Makauls and Clipsos (the Diplomatic Delegate, not so much...I'm sorry, but she looks completely out of place on a battlefield).

WOW. That was really helpful, thanks!

I will be honest, this discussion so far has really made the decision a little harder. But given how affordable Infinity is, there really is no reason why I can't go with multiple factions, as you said. I think my first faction will simply come down to me deciding what I like the aesthetic of the most-- Makauls, Myrmidons, or the Caledonian Highlander Army pack (as much as I like the standard Ariadna starter kit, if I go Ariadna I know I'm going to want SAS, Wulvers and more Highlander Greys eventually).

Thanks again!

Based on your armies, I'd suggest Aleph. It'll likely be the most familiar to you.

Don't get me wrong, any of those factions you like can do it, but I think you'll like the aleph style the most.

I'm not a jealous man usually.. but this is one of those times

I can't really add much in terms of what has already been written, those look like some pretty effective army lists above! I will say though that Aleph can be really nasty to face - I regularly get my ass handed to me by an Aleph playing friend, and they have a lot of little pixie-tricks that seem to flummox me most of the time (the 'Optical disruption' of the Myrmidons for instance, which means my guys are often blasting at thin air). And the 'human size TAGs' in the form of the Greek characters - all very nasty stuff!
