Reading a lot of the horus heresy books has left me with too many ideas on what to do for a HH army, but I managed to narrow it down to 4;
Emperor's Children: awesome paint scheme, could allow me to make a heavily elite, power armoured army, contains a lot of really diverse characters.
Imperial Fists: A yellow army never goes unoticed at a tournament, really enjoyed their fluff would be fun to make into a themed competitive army.
World Eater's : A fan of white armies (even if I already own 3), would use the blood angels book which I'm a fan of
Alpha legion: Be very interesting to make an army based around covert ops and infiltration, their fluff is truly amazing, whilst modelling oppotunities are great painting will be dull.
So I'm not really asking for people to pick a favourite or pick for me but rather, What would you pick from that list and why?
thanks

Does this mean you're making a HH themed army to use in 40K, or do you intend to play them as an army in the HH Betrayal game made by forgeworld? Its not a huge difference but it would impact which units you'd be using. That said Imperial Fists are always awesome.

My plan is to make a 2000 pts ish army for the HH Betrayal and then slowly add in what I need to make a 1750 40k list
Just been thinking more about this and I'm stuck between WC and IF, it's quite close

I suppose it all really depends on what kind of army you want.
EC: Elite, low model-count army
IF: Lots of bodies, lots of cannons
WE: Assault, assault, assault
AL: Shooty, Snipers, not a ton of Tanks
I myself am doing Imperial Fists, mostly due to the prominence of siege artillery in their lists. Best of luck making your choice; its quite the investment.

When you say Heresy army, how Heresy are you Heresying? Like, months before the war, right before, during, or just after?
And I'm biased, but Alpha Legion.

if doing IF, it will be pre heresy, otherwise if doing EC I will use the loyalist rules as it wil be done during heresy

After reading through a fair chunk of HH books, I'd go with Iron Hands or Thousand Sons, myself. Those two have the most inspiring fluff for me, with the Sons being more interesting out of the pair. And I'd do them as Loyalists, during the Great Crusade, after Magnus had found them and stopped the Fleshchange.
Shame that the models are so expensive.
