Hello I recently gave oil washing a try but am having problems.

While using lamp black winsor Newton with odorless mineral sprit from the home depot the wash starts to separate or the pigments clump together making spots in the cup and models. Would that indicate a problem with my ratios? or am i using the wrong brand of spirit?
Also how long does it usually take to dry. (Its been a day though from what I understood it doesn’t take tooo long)

Any non video tutorials would be great too as I cant watch at work =(

From what I gathered when I started with oil washes, it can depend on the type of oil paint you're using. I think the low-end Winsor & Newton student paints (I can't remember the exact label) tends to get a bit "grainy". There's not much you can do about keeping the consistency to stick when drying on the figure, but to keep it from getting too separated, you should mix the oil and mineral spirit constantly when using it.
You're using oils, so they tend to take as long as a day to dry, longer to be fully dry, I think 3-4 days.

Ah well may be the case. i got the paint from michaels
http://www.winsornewton.com/products/oil-colours/winton-oil-colour/colour-chart/lamp-black/ < i believe this one

But I believe i used a slightly moist synthetic brush. i will have to keep that in mind next time. luckily it was only on a few test fire warriors.

Hi there, if you want a text based tutorial on using oil paints, have a look through my dakka article: Painting With Oils.

As for the paint you are using, it can be grainy according to nuclealosaur - an amazing painter.

Probably not something you'll find on eBay dude..

It's called mineral turpentine here in Australia, get it from a hardware store like Bunnings, mitre10 etc although sometimes you can find it at Coles and woolworths, depending in the size of their "DIY" section..

Snake-eyes, everybody wins!! Oh, no, wait, my bad.. Oops..
