I just started my Chaos army and I'm planning on making a combination Night Lord/Thousand Sons force. I know exactly how I'm doing my Thousand Sons, but I haven't figured out how to do my Night Lords. So does anyone have any recommendations on what color I should use as my base? I've been seeing that Midnight Blue works well, but I want to double check before I blow money on paint I don't need. Also, I've seen and read that some Night Lords wear skull faced helmets (eg Talos from Soul Hunter), and I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get some of those?

Google has many nice pictures. You can hardly go wrong with blues especially since you need it for thousand suns anyway!

Just a word of caution: thousand sons cult troops are pretty bad so maybe play some friendly games or just field them as regular chaos marines. If you want full fluff and your opponents are likewise though, more power to you.

GW sells a night lords upgrade kit:

I'm pretty cheap so I tend to buy Dark Vengeance kits and replace shoulders/heads to save money rather but it's up to you and you're budget really. Also if you have a hellbrute, chop him up and turn him into a daemon price.

I use regal blue on mine. In the old 3rd ed CSM codex, it says to use regal blue. For my guys, I just use black primer then regal blue for a base. For highlights, I use enchanted blue. Not all Night Lords wear skull helmets. I have pics of mine in my painting blog.

When I had a Night Lords warband back in the 2nd ed, the colour pictures in the codex were quite varied.

I went for the old GW blue-black variant.

If I remember correctly it went something like:
Prime black > 50-50 Chaos black/Regal blue base coat > Regal blue highlights > knock it back with thin Black wash > and then extreme edge highlights (very minute amount) of Elf grey...

Then pretty much painting some forked lightning onto some of the armour pads and I think the trims were done in copper/gold with green wash to get a verdigris effect.

You know... After writing that... I really miss my old Chaos force...
