Subject: What should I buy for a skeletal army?

I'm thinking of ditching 40k for WM, and since the entry price is so low I'd like to get a start modeling while I learn the rules. I'm going to be playing Cryx and with all the options I'd like some advice on what to buy.
I'm a big fan of undead Pirates, and I'd like to focus my army on units like revenants, pistol wraiths, Blackbanes crew; a general skeletal theme.
What builds would you recommend to get the best out of units like this. Is there a specific Warcaster or jack unit that has better synergy with the undead?
|
I notice my posts seem to bring threads to a screeching halt. Considering the content of most threads on dakka, you're welcome. |

There are a lot of ways to go with a theme as broad as skeletons and undead within cryx. Cryx plays a little more infantry-centric than most factions so you will get plenty of chances to field your undead troops.
Terminus is well known for his use of revenant crew as bodyguards using his sacrificial pawn ability.
Blackbanes play well in scenario games where their incorporeal ability can help them keep contesting zones.
pisol wraiths are very good at either removing specific infantry targets or locking down a large model for a turn before your opponent gets a chance to kill them.
If you like the look of the skull-headed bane thralls and knights they are both very effective infantry units that get a lot of praise. Likewise, the iron liches of the withershadow combine are very good.
There aren't any particular static "builds" in this game, but if you give us a caster and a couple of other jacks, solos, or units I'm sure there will be plenty of people here willing to help you put together a good list. Are there any warcasters that caught your eye? any one unit or solo you want to play the most?

Just knowing that actually helps a lot. If there aren't obvious meta-builds like in *sigh* that OTHER game, I'll start with the units that catch my eye and work from there.
What I want to play the most...
Units; Revenant Pirate Crew, Blackbane's Ghost Raiders
Solos; Pistol Wraiths, Captain Rengrave, Scrap Thralls
There's no particular Caster or Jack that I'm drawn to.

Try looking at pSkarre and both Dennys for possible casters. pSkarre runs infantry well and both Dennys can make just about anything shine.
Also, if you haven;t already, check out the Cryx forums on the PP boards. There is a good thread with alot of info on casters, warjacks, units, etc. Good for getting the basics and some synergies.

Terminus or the pSkarre both work well with the lists you propose. Asphyxious3 as well.

Do note that the normal Revenants are generally regarded as "Not Good" by most players.

They should play just fine with Terminus. I mean, they're
just cannon fodder, after all. While I understand that mcthralls
with necrosurgeons can probably spam it out better, I still
like the crew with the Lich Lord.

Revenant Crew have their place. Play em with Gaspy3 with Carnage, gang, and veteran leader with Rengrave up? Scary.

Just wanted to thank everyone for your help. If revenants aren't all that great, I think I'll focus on Blackbane's crew. For my first pick up I think I'll get;
Blackbane's Ghost Raiders
Wraith Witch Denny
Pistol Wraiths x 2
Anything else obvious I should add for 30-50 points?
For this list should I stick with WWD and buy some separate jacks, or get the Battlegroup w/ Denny and jacks?
Sorry total newb question, but should I also buy my army book, or just the MKII rulebook and the update card deck?

The army book is mostly optional, as anything you'll be buying comes with the appropriate stat card. Unless you're running a theme force, of course, and I certainly wouldn't recommend them for beginners. I'd just get Prime Mk II, and possibly pass on the card deck. As much as I'm loathe to recommend them as they're an error-ridden hellhole of misinformation, Battle College provides a pretty good summary of most units in the game if you want to check something out before you buy them. The battlegroup is an excellent place to start, as it'll get you acquainted with the rules without forcing you to dive in head first, which usually leads to tears. That, and it's a great deal for the price, with the Deathrippers and Slayer finding their way into a lot of lists. That, and pDenny is an awesome caster anyhow. As for your initial purchases, it's not a bad place to start, although I might throw on a Machine Wraith or Necrotech so that you can play 15 point games with your battlegroup (which weighs in at 14 points, the highest of all of the starter kits). Pistol Wraiths are great, as is Wraith Witch Denny. Haven't seen Blackbane's get too much table time, but they're incorporeal flaming infantry so I think there's a pretty good argument for them if you're not facing too many Menites or Doom Reavers.

Revenant Crew may be "sub-optimal," but I gotta say, using them as sacrificial pawns for Terminus, and then bringing them back again and again and again, turn after turn, is just plain fun.
And running them in the Terminus tier list is fun too. Who doesn't like Incorporeal, Spd 8 models for the first turn?

A blister of nightwretches (or your arcnode of choice) and you are good to go. blisters come with two arcnodes so are perfect. Battlebox is OK. You get 3 arcnodes and a slayer. But most casters use 2-3 arcnodes and only one (mortenebra) really likes a slayer.
That should get you to around 20-25 point games to practice with and then see what you need to add to the army to get it to 35.
Regarding army books I really like them because I can see all the stats and rules for all the units and have some painting and fluff as well. Card deck can be cool, but doesn;t include everything, but allows you to proxy easily and, if your group doesn't mind, play non PP models or conversions.
