I apologize ahead for my question, which probably is obvious for most people.
But since I am quite new to the game, this goes beyond my knowledge.

If I have a 10man Assault Marine Squad and dedicate a transport for them
(for a 35 pts discount instead of their jump packs).
Must all 10 of my Assault Marines loose their Jump Packs?

I am thinking that if I, for instance, dedicate a Razorback to the squad. Then Combat Squad them
so they go 5 and 5.
Then I put 5 in the Razorback, but what about the other 5. Do they get to keep their Jump Packs?

Or if I dedicate a Land raider to the squad, and combat squad them. Will 5 Assault Marines get to keep their JP?

Thanks in advance.

Combat Squad happens well after the list is built.

All 10 would have to lose the packs.

You could just run 2 units of 5, loosing packs on one unit of 5 and keeping the packs on the other unit of 5.

Oh, well ...

Having them in two seperate units form the beginning means +10 pts for the sgt.

and I also wanted this so that I may choose whether or not to combat squad them (depending on mission - playing killpoints a.s.o).

But then I know, thanks for the answer!

Well 2 Sergeants are better than one.

Even better, two free Rhinos are better than one!

Well, I am building an army, where I kinda am uncertain whether I should combat squad (to get more than 2x Troops for contesting - right now I have 2x 10man Assault Marine Squads).
Or skip a Meltagun (or multimelta on a land raider) to be able to combat squad them.

you don't jave to declare combat squads until deployment and weapons purchases don't affect their ability to combat squad unless you can't afford enough models points-wise.

Are you sure you quite understand how Combat Squads work?

Assault squad is the squad where the +1 attack of the sergeant is most useful. And you can also give him a power weapon for extra punch. The real drawback of two squads instead of the one is the fast attack slots they take.

Thank you all for your replies.

Another Question:

If I have a 10man Assault Marine Squad, which has a Dedicated Land raider (skip Jump Packs).

Can I combat squad them so that I have sgt with power fist in the Land raider (and 4 other vanilla Assault Marines), and Deep Strike 5 Assault Marines (2 Melta Guns & 3 vanilla), or do I have to have Jump Packs to be able to Deep Strike?
(Or is there any other rule that prevents me from doing this?

You have to have permission to deepstrike. One way to get this permission to Deepstrike is to have Jump Packs

If you dont have Jump Packs what is allowing you to Deepstrike?

Query. How are you getting a Land Raider as a Dedicated Transport for Assault Marines?

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I might be wrong (haven't played that long - about 5 games in total so far), but as far as I know, the only way to bring Land raiders for Blood Angels, is as Dedicated Transport.

THat is correct - they have the most available, as any squad can take one as a dedicated transport

Correct, they can *ONLY* be taken as a Dedicated Transport - they can't be taken as extra Heavy Support options.
One other option available to you is to take the Land Raider as a transport for a different squad, and keep the Assault squad's jump packs. You would then be able to combat squad them, and have one squad in the Land Raider (the Bulky rule for jump packs means they take up 2 spaces each, so the whole squad wouldn't fit).

This has 2 problems in your case, though.
1) you can't start the game in the Land Raider as it's not the transport for that unit - they'd have to embark on turn 1.
2) you can't Deep Strike the second combat squad, as to do so would mean keeping the entire unit in Reserve.

To be honest, though, all of these split approaches are impractical. You're best either keeping the units with 10 men and jump packs for all - deciding on deployment whether you want to combat squad and/or Deep Strike them - or take 5 man units in Razorbacks for added firepower.
10 men in a Rhino isn't worth it as they can't assault out of it, you are *almost* always better taking jump packs instead.
10 men in a Land Raider is one way of creating a powerful mech list, but gets expensive quick, so you wouldn't be left with many Troops units for objectives, as it seems you (wisely) want to have.

Except that Jump Infantry cannot embark into a Transport unless the transport specifically states they can.

Oh, nuts, you're right. Sorry. Getting the differences between 5th and 6th sub-types muddled up.

Actually this is no longer true, you seperate the unit before (or at the time of) deployment (can not remember the exact wording). You can Deep Strike one and deploy the other.

Didn't they change the definition to Infantry (Jump)?

Does that have any affect on them embarking (Away from my book currently)

so you are saying that:

yes they did, but embarking specifically restricts them from embarking.

or

no they did not and embarking specifically restricts them from embarking.

Who knows. They refer to models as both Infantry (Jump) and Jump Infantry.
