Hmm. Well I have had this bloodthirster for quite some time now and I cannot seem to make it. I'm not really looking to buy any hobby tools or do any pinning, any other ideas?

Sorry to disappoint you, but if you want it to last, you'll need to do more than just glue. You will obviously want to use super glue (and not plastic glue) for the joins, but unless you want it to remain extremely fragile, you'll need to pin it. From experience with multiple metal Privater Press warjacks and old school Space Marine dreadnoughts, it is only the pinned joins that will have any real strength to them.

Heck, I just put together two old attack bikes (plastic bikes, metal sidecars) and I even pinned those together for more long term strength.

Both your local hobby shop and GW should carry a hobby drill (like this, for instance) and it is completely worth the $17 USD equivalent. I pin even plastic models if I feel that the join won't be strong enough.

I do have a non pinned metal hell cannon, and an archaon model, I'm wondering if I can strengthen the bonds with sculpting putty because i am flat out refusing to pay for GW's stupid products

Since when is a pin vice a stupid product? If you have something against GW's pin vice in particular, get another brand. Go onto ebay and search for pin vice, there's heaps available for cheaper, in all sorts of different design.

You can just use a drill bit instead of buying an actual hobby drill. Hell, you might even be able to find a cheaper one at your local hardware store. If you want to use GS or some equivalent, you need to put super glue on one part, a blob of GS/putty in the middle, more super glue, and press the pieces together. Make sure the putty comes out of the join and you can scrape away the excess. Works better if you put a hole in one part, put superglue in it and then the putty, and do the same thing. It's a strong bond, but not as good as pinning.

Although much of what GW puts out there is gak, I actually went so far as to buy a second one of their pin drills, so as I can keep one at my flat and one at my parents's house - I find it to be a quality, useful product, well worth the price. I looked at some other pin drills, and whilst they were cheaper, they just didn't "fit" my hand as well.

+1 for buying a non-GW pin vice - it's an invaluable tool and not just for pinning. If you're careful, you can even use the large electric drills/drivers that many already own, but the enhanced control of a lightweight hand tool is well worth the few dollars/pounds that a basic model will cost. Go to a hardware store, go to a non-gaming hobby shop, or go online and I'm sure you'll find one with a price tag that won't make you cringe. Refusing to pin is going to seriously limit you when it comes to metal models, as well as skinny resin bits.

With that thing, you must pin it. I will go against the others a bit and suggest using JB Kwik as glue. It is much stronger than any bond made using superglue (even with green stuff) and sets up in 5 minutes. Pin the joint, glue with JB Kwik, never worry about the model coming apart.

I'm planning on using green stuff, btw I'm not actually planning on using the whip. Got an axe for the right hand as well from the old doombull model. Fits in perfectly. I've had succes by just super glueing and green stuffing with everything but the wings so I will probably use this technique.

By the way by stupid GW products I don't just mean most of their massively overpriced tools, I mean I remember the time when greater daemons were £25 and heralds of Khorne £12 now the greater daemons are £36 and heralds £23.50 shows how pathetic and money grabbing they really are!

IDK I bought a GW pin vice and I'm very pleased with it (admittedly it was a lot cheaper when I bought it).

New drill bits can be bought at your friendly local hardware store.

Anyway, back on topic, another suggestion IN ADDITION to pinning is to do a little GS (don't buy from GW again, search for 'kneadatite' on eBay and you get a lot more for your money, and it's the same stuff) welding

What you need to do, is after you have sorted out the pins, apply superglue to both parts, then sandwich a blob of GS in between the two parts, this creates a stronger bond with the superglue, cures fairly quickly, and if you use the right amount you usually fill in those annoying joint gaps as well...

Try Heresy for green stuff & pin vices.

Much cheaper than GW.

Buy a pin vice. It's an essential bit of kit. Gw/non-gw, it doesn't matter. You need one if you're gonna pin anything. 1mm bits and paper clips for wire. Don't use you best side cutters for cutting paper clips though.

I'm not going to pin it I have a method that works just as well as pinning, anyway I don't often assemble many GW products so buying many, expensive GW tools is a bit pointless...

You can use GW tools for non-GW minis, so you don't have to buy them just for GW products.

There is no method that works as well as pinning. A pin vice is a general tool. Mine was from Hobbycraft, some unbranded thing,

You really can't use price as an excuse not to get a pin vice. It's one tool (why would you say you need MANY for pinning?), it's invaluable if you do any amount of modeling, it costs LESS than the package of GS you have to buy to do it your way. Don't get one for all I care, but it's ridicilous that you're repeating yourself about how horribly expensive it is, and how you refuse to get one of GW's tools, when you clearly don't have to.

Pin it brother. A simple pin vice is less than $10. Then some plier snips to cut the pins (add to your household tool box) and small metal paper clips to use as the pins.

Top tip for pinning:

Clean and dry-fit the parts.

Drill a hole in ONE part. Wet the hole with spit and put a blob of blu-tack over it. Press the parts together. The blu-tack will stick to the other part with a little nub where the hole on the matching part is. The spit acts as a lubricant and stops the blue tack sticking. When dried (unlike oils or vaseline) it doesn't interfere with gluing. Drill there. Viola! Aligned holes with no messing about. Then insert your pin.

My head just exploded. Thanks for posting that as it will be very helpful in the future.

I put together my first bloodthirster back in 4th ed before I knew about pinning. The only part that has fallen off is the whip, but, man, putting those wings on were a . I had to hold that model together for what seemed like hours while pouring on the super glue. Put my second one together a couple of weeks ago and pinned it proper. That joker is solid. No way any part of it is coming off. Got it all pinned and put together while watching a single episode of Law and Order.

Trust me I know what you mean those f Ing wings have almost reduced me to making a (chicken wings) skarbrand instead!
