Hello fellow dakkaites.

A question came up today when we had a zone that was area terrain.

It was enclosed with 1 door in only and you could not fire into or out of it.
Deep strike was not allowed into it it was supposed to be like a small zone mortalis thing.

Then our tyranid player put his 6 lictors in it from reserves since he said they don't deep strike they just pop up in terrain.
We had not thought of this so we basically went for it.

Now in retrospect thinking about it. I was wondering if lictors deep strike ?
And if they don't what other units have deep strike like abilities that is not deep strike?

Regards Ogard

Do Lictors have the Deep Strike Rule?

If yes then they can Deep Strike.

If not then they can not Deep Strike.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

No they do not deep strike, they have another special rule that allows them to deploy on the battlefield anywhere that is more than 1'' away from an enemy unit. They cannot move or assault but can run and shoot as normal, also they do not scatter. What your opponent did was a legal move.

The only unit other than lictors that I know has something similar is Marbo. A BA Guardsman Special Character.

Is Deathleaper in the current Tyranid Codex? If so I'd assume it'd have a similar rule (if not the same rule)

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding the original post, but I'm going to make a couple of guesses, and Ogard can correct me if I've misunderstood.

1. The particular piece of area terrain you had was a ruin* with an intact roof, which you had agreed before the game that units could not Deep Strike into.

2. The Tyranid player had Lictors pop up in it, which you questioned, as you thought this was like Deep Strike, which was forbidden by the agreement, but when you forbade Deep Strike, you guys were actually talking just about "dropping out of the sky"-style Deep Strike, and you were open to considering other kinds of Deep Strike which (in fluff terms) didn't involve dropping out of the sky through an intact roof.

3. You are asking...
a. Whether Lictors actually Deep Strike.
and
b. Whether there are (other) units which Deep Strike which aren't actually dropping from the sky, which you should be considering when adapting your house rule in regards to that Ruin.

---------------

So, here are some answers:

Lictors do not Deep Strike. Their Chameleonic Skin rule allows them to appear from Reserve anywhere on the table that is more than 1" away from an enemy model. So them appearing in that ruin seems perfectly legimate, assuming there was enough space.

As for units which use the Deep Strike rules but which aren't dropping out of the sky, the ones which occur to me are...

Tyranid Mawlocs - Burrow up from underground
Chaos Daemons - Appear through a warp rift
Terminators - Teleport (except for SW, who instead use a drop pod)
SM Legion of the Damned - Appear through a warp rift
Units using the Gate of Infinity or The Summoning psychic powers - Teleport

A quick side note which may explain your confusion- in the PREVIOUS version of the Nid Codex, Lictors DID Deep Strike into a piece of Area Terrain. And yes, the fluff was that they were actually appearing from a hiding place where they had reached before the battlefield, as opposed to dropping out of the sky, so if you were forbidding Deep Striking into that terrain piece purely based on the rationale that things wouldn't be able to drop through the intact roof, Lictors might have been a reasonable exception, even under their old rules.

*Remember that Buildings use totally different rules from Area Terrain, and are more like an immobile transport vehicle which either player can have a squad embark upon.

Thank you for all the answers. To clarify my post.

We had a few peices of terrain stuck together and had decided on before the game that it was impossible to deep strike into it.
Didn't reay think of that some stuff pop out of nowhere without deepstriking.

Since we had only talked about deep strike before the game we went ehead and allowed it.
Even tho it was not really what was intended for the piece of terrain.
Was during an apocalypse match so a lot if stuff happening at the same time.

We have decided to next time just outright ban al sorts of entering the building that does not include walking in through the door as was intended.
Was not about dropping from the sky more about having a small confided place fore some cqb action.

All interaction from outside was not allowed. Couldn't shoot in or out of it no psycich powers or defense could penetrate from outside in or vice versa.

The most correct answer is don't take Lictors.

What you are asking is very much house rules though.
If you want it so you can't DS or appear in it, make it impassable or a building instead of ruins.

Like the Lictor the Ymgrals also so the same sort of weird "pre-deployment" but can assault on arrival. Ymgrals have the Dormant special rule, were they are described as "sleeping or hibernating" in the area terrain waiting on the arrival of the hive fleet.
