So I bought assault on black reach for the orks but I want to try the space marines. But there aren't 2 troop choices, there is a captain, a dreadnought, a squad of terminators and then 10 tactical marines with flamer missile launcher and one sergeant. If I am not mistaken I need two troops choices for a legal army list and each squad of ten tactical marines get a sergeant and 1 special weapon. This came with 10 marines 1 sergeant and 2 special weapons, how is THAT LEGAL?!?!

10 man tacticals can take a special weapon AND a heavy weapon. The starter sets generally come with half an army, forcing you to buy the other half, so only 1 troops choice makes plenty of sense for GW wanting more money (they were floundering when Black Reach came out).

It is not a legal army for eternal war missions. You'd need another troops choice.

Im pretty sure that the Tac squad can deply as 2- 5 model units that would count as 2 troop choices.Or they can be the full 10 of course.

No its not, but its also a starter box. Its to teach you and a friend the game, then send you off on your own to face the Xenos on your own.

It works as an army for 500 point games, for beginners new to the hobby.

Most games are 1500 points, so obviously GW wants you to purchase more muhreens

Just get on eBay and find a cheap 5 man scout squad. That's another troop choice and a legal army for minimal ££s.

i would just buy a tactical squad box, more spess mehreennns is the way to go

Ahh yeah,just checked my Codex on that,heh.

And the ability I was speaking of is "Combat Squads"

Anyhow,my son and I played several battles when I first got the set so for practice purposes.And im sure players wouldnt mind if you played the group in the 500 pt range for casual learning games. I should add that that size fight with the mix of units provided in the box is an excelent way to learn the rules of the game as well as what units you want to start adding first.Myself I went for the Orks first thats why I wasnt clear on the SM rules,oops!

Also my son wanted more marines soon after we got it so I just ordered those snap fit ones from GW,at the time you could get 5 for 12 bucks or something.Check out thier site or just hit Ebay for some bulk ones as many are selling the individual units from the AOBR set still on the sprues for a very resonable price

Finally if you havent yet gotten them,but the codex`s ,for both armys.They are must haves before ya even start buying more models.
