So I bought a nondiscript chaos sorcerer off ebay, and when I got it, it turend out to be a metal Ahriman model ( http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440207a&prodId=prod1710108a) with the bolter cut off (poorly) and the backpack replaced by a sword. I've GSed the tubes to make them look more like tentacles, Cut the left hand off and will replace it with a talon hand (or a sword if the talon looks too much). Now I have run into some problems after cutting the heatsink thing of the chest, it looks a bit empty and am at a loss on what to fill it with. Also to replace the backpack I got a pair of wings off ebay as well (Sanguinary Guard). The only problem is that after filing off the sm parts it left another flat section that I have no idea how to deal with. This is my first conversion so any help is appreciated.
A blutac mock up of the model
Front
Back
Hands
Wings
Also, I just noticed that I put the wings on backwards in the blutack mockup (i.e. wings curving outwards rather than inwards). This may solve my problem
EDIT: nope definitely prefer the wings curving inward if I can fix it

I like the look of the talon, very Tzeentch-y. You could GS a chaos star on the chest maybe? Or perhaps an eye? Depends on how confident you are in your own skills.

My gs skills are beginner to non-existant, no reason not to try though. Altough with the new book I might scrap the wings and try for a cape to make an undevied sorcerer. or not. I mainly play friendly matches anyway.

Hi mate, sucks to hear. Maybe try and purchase an Icon? or something... I can have alook around in my bitz to see if I have one for ya.
When you bought it off Ebay in the listing did it say it was made of metal or not? if it said it was plastic you should take it up with him and resolve it.
anyway's if you'd like me to look for something that might go well for your little lord :3 let me no via PM.

I like the talon. I'd stick with that unless you plan on running him with a sword anyway, in which case you might as well go for wysiwyg
a passable eye of tzeentch on the chest should be pretty doable. I'd suggest forming the eye on a flat surface first, then let it dry for a while before you try to fit it to the chest. after it's had a couple hours to set, it'll be much easier to shape to the chest and glue it on vs. trying to mold the whole thing directly on the model.
I don't have any great ideas for the flat spot between the wings. maybe add some GS spikes as if they were coming out of his spine or some tentacles? tzeentch is all about mutation, so you can get away with anything

I have to agree, an Eye of Tzeench would be good on the chest if you could do it. As for the back, maybe put some tattered cloth, hanging icons, tentacles, really anything that makes you think "Man, this guy obviously worships a psyco god of mutation."

Thanks for all the sugestions. For the chest, an eye does sound cool but he already has an eye as a belt buckle, might look a bit weird having both together but I definitly will try it out when I get around to buying some sculpting tools. In the meantime after Kronic's suggestion of an icon, I saw one of my champions wearing this http://bitzbarn.com/oscommerce/catalog/popup_image.php?pID=2656, found a spare and mocked this up
Pretty happy with that if the eye falls through.
Having another go through my bits bags I found a few suitable icons and the like to try out.
Tentacles
Not bad, still leaves plenty of flat showing unless I use a heap of gs
Knights topper
Again, not bad but forces the wings flat, which robs the model of a little dynamism (if that is a real word)
Marauder horsemen icon
Now we're getting somewhere. Obviously I would remove the rest of the standard pole and probaly the skulls as well. Has the flat wing problem, but I am prepared to deal with it in this case.
Tail
Was only planning on using the top bit of the tail, but the more I look at it the more the whole tail grows on me. Any flat that it leaves uncoverd can easily be made into wing trimming/base
@BAN, I would have gone plastic given the choice but I bought the sorcerer before I knew I was going to convert it. If I knew I was going to be doing work on the wings I would have looked longer and payed a bit more for plastic. Still learning though.
Also, I really didn't want to over do it. Tzeench (and Slannesh), to me, seem more artistically minded, and as such would bestow gifts to their chosen with more thought, as opposed to Khorne or Nurgle who would slap a claw here a tentalce there and then call it a day. Unless he found it funny, Chaos is fickle.

slaanesh might be a bit more artsie, but tzeentch is all about chaos and randomness
of all the options you've got there, I like the tail the best. it does look a bit odd coming out of his upper back, but I think you could make it convincing anyway.

That tail is cool. A question though, does it fit lower down?

What I am trying to avoid is messy. I'm making a sorcerer, not a spawn. I'm of the opinion that in conversions, less is more. If you can get something done without going overboard I think it will make a better model. Hmm, can't really explain myself with the right words, but I prefer a more simple and subtle aesthetic. I feel it can be more striking than if I just tentacled up everything.
Dheneb wrote:That tail is cool. A question though, does it fit lower down?
Short answer, no. It has to cover the wings. Although with some cutting and filing I could probably get the tail much closer to the model, making the tail look much more like a continuation of the spine, rather than a tentacle sprouting out of his back
