So I was given a couple of shoeboxes full of little plastic lizards in various states of repair, assembly and painting. Digging through it, I even found some metal stuff.

About half of it is old 5th edition stuff (crapton of skinks, some stegs and slaans), and the rest newer stuff (mostly cavalry and saurus figs).

Even found a 5th Ed army book at the bottom.

Beyond the fact that the models are cool, sentient lizards are awesome, and i love the aztec schtick....

...are these guys good?

Yep, there are no armies in WHFB that clearly fall into an 'OP' category right now but lizardmen are on the higher end of the scale. Slaan are amazing, dunno about the cav, saurus are pretty good and skinks in small units should work well. The only thing thats below par is the big monsters (cannon magnets)

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I've never played Fantasy before and honestly I only know about 2 other people who play, but I must say I am tempted. Maybe if i can find a cheap rulebook on ebay or something.

Will have to start digging into these boxes and figure out what I have here

Cold one cavalry are definitly sub-par but that goes for all heavy cavalry in 8th. Apart from that the rest of the book is pretty decent all round and on the whole a good army to start with.

May your arm girth frighten the elderly, slow moving adults and very small children.
May your gains be plentiful.

So Slaan are really ugly and I don't like looking at them, so ideally I'd like to try to form a force without them.

...so I'd be looking at Skink Priests and Oldbloods and Scar Veterans, right?

Is there any good reason to take Temple Guard without those ugly floating toads?

Supposedly slann are really needed in any game. If you don't like the model i'd use a 'counts as' model from somewhere else. Of course you couldn't do this at a GW though.

Really depends on the game. In friendlies, anything goes, but a list at 1500+ points without a Slann has no chance to win against a proper list.

Never seen anyone play fantasy at my local GW to be honest. They certainly don't run Fantasy events as far as I have noticed, although they do small 40k tournaments every 2 months or so.

Vague idea of converting a feathered serpent (coatl) to be a counts-as slaan.

Granted, slann play a huge part in the army, but ive got used to not using them.

I run a pure skinks army, so slann and saurus are out.

Tehenhuan either on foot or on an EoTG works fine for starters.
I also run Tetto'ekko aswell for the magic support he can bring.

Those 2 alone really do IMO make up for the loss of a slann.
I do bring a skink priest aswell, but thats simply as a scroll caddy.

I think i found one of the skink characters in one of these shoeboxes of minis. There's a guy standing over a dead skaven with a lizard holding up a book or something. That's Tehenhuan right?

I find it funny skaven don't really consider the lizardmen a huge threat but the skaven are one of the lizardmen's greatest enemies other than chaos. Lizardmen even have an banner that lets them hurt skaven better (skaven-pelt i think) but skaven only ever specialize in killing dwarfs and orc & goblins.

Does anyone know what these are? I found them in a bag with lots of cavalry bits.

Probably 'jungle swarms' if they're an old GW model. They might not be a GW model or not from warhammer fantasy battles but you could probably use them as 'jungle swarms' if nothing else. I haven't really seen them though and i haven't faced enough different lizardmen players to know if they're any good. I haven't seen anybody use them though so that's probably a bad sign.

Along with Skaven, Lizardmen are probably the strongest army in the game at the moment.

Their one redeeming feature is that they're quite hard to use to get them up to this standard, but they have a plethora of extremely strong options once you get your head around the army.

Those are the snakes that come with the cavalry, to adorn the base.
People make swarms out of them.

OK, so i've gone through these boxes and worked out what I've accumulated and gotten... these are all current edition models listed below:

54 Cold One Cavalry
64 Skinks (Javelins / Blowpipes)
59 Saurus Warriors (Spears / Hand Weapons)
12 Temple Guard
7 Skink Characters / Heroes (Chiefs, Priests, Champions)
2 Saurus Characters / Heroes (Scar vets?)
1 Tehenhauin (Skink Named Character)
7 Jungle Swarms
3 Kroxigors

Also some classic models that look in good shape but I'm not sure about:

2 Classic Metal Slaan (ugly)
16 Classic Metal Temple Guard (ugly)
2 Classic Metal Stegadons (kinda cool)
2 Classic Metal Salamanders + 8 Metal Handlers (pretty cool)

Theres a bunch of classic skinks and saurus models here that I don't like the look of... also all the skinks are carrying bows and appear to be clones. But yeah, crapton of those. Also some metal terradons.

So um. What sorts of things should I think about purchasing to form a real fighting force? I'm not fond of Slaan (they're ugly and are made of cheese) but what else is there that stands out to you as something I should get?

EDIT: Wow. Did the math. Easily about 5000pts worth not even including the older models X_X

Wow 54 cavalry! Too bad they'll likely never see the light of day. Imo those guys are overpriced

You actually have quite a lot to mess around with. Maybe get some more salamanders and some chameleons

Holy crap that's a ton of saurus cavalry! I don't think you'll ever need 54 saurus/cold one cavalry.

Maybe i can try to convert some of the cavalry guys into oldbloods or scarvets?

...and then maybe sell some? xD

As far as "coolness" goes, the only two models I would seriously love to get at this stage are an Engine of the Gods (because that thing is epic) and an Oldblood on Carnisaur.

They might be good in the rumored next book, still 54 is way more than you're likely to ever need.

PS: Vets on cold ones are beast now, make 2-3 and have fun.

Pretty good seeing you'll still have 38! Somewhat comparable pricing (x2 boxes of cold ones is $70 last I remember)
