So a bunch of gaming buddies invited me into their little project and as an added twist we had to pick our armies from 3 random choices.
The rules were very simple:
Each participant gets three draws from the hat and then chooses their army from one of the three.
The army must have a battleforce as this must be the first purchase and a HQ must be bought with it so games can be played.
The subsequent purchases are limited to no more than £50 per month. Purchases cannot be made on Ebay or GW. FLGS ONLY.
Each additional purchase must be put into the army on the month it is purchased and an army list must be presented at each game.
We are not to know what our opponents have chosen but we are allowed to see what they have to choose from.
The first round is 500 points and each round lasts six weeks. The points limits go up by 250 points each month.
Player one: Eldar, Space Wolves and Imperial Guard.
Player two: Dark Angels, Space Marines and Orks.
Player three: Necrons, Blood Angels and Chaos Marines.
I got: Dark Eldar, Tau Empire and Tyranids.
I think I got the bum deal as none of the armies I got are all that competitive.
I'm not sure what to choose as I have very limited knowledge on all three armies in 6th ed. I had a DE force in 3rd but I've never played Tau or Nids.
We also have the option of putting one choice back in the hat and we each pick once randomly from those put back and the left over choice: Chaos Daemons.
Has anyone got any advice? Do I give up one of my picks and randomly choose again or take what I've got?

I know as a SW and cron player that tau can be a real pain in the side if they are played right.
fire worriers get shredded most time in CC however they managed to kill one of lone wolves in CC :/ and broad sides are brutal.
I also fight against DE a lot and i tear through them with Bolt guns and equivalent, the fight is usually over by turn 3 or 4
So if i had your choice i would go with tau, hope that helps.

Are you kidding? Nids are tearing up right now! Easily the best choice you have going, especially against the armies that have been picked, none of them are truely bad match ups for you. The only ones that may give you a problem in later games at higher points would be Crons and SW's.
Plus Nids can be painted to a good standard super quick. So that will take the pressure off you for time, but if you do find yourself struggling for time one month, just by a MC that will be the bulk of your 250 point bump up into one model.
Whats the ruling on devolping an allied force?

No allies. Another advantage for nids.

That's insane.
There are some pretty good reports there.
I should note that we have opted to exchange one of our choices for another randomly generated one and we decided to not purchase the battleforces for our first round as this made it quite unbalanced and gave some armies a huge advantage.
The final draw:
Player one - Drew Tau.
Player two - Opted to keep his choices.
Player three - Drew Eldar
This left either Chaos Daemons or whatever else was put into the hat.
I drew... NECRONS!!!
Player three has a huge army already so he chucked them.
So now I am torn between two forces...
Necron and Nids.
Those would have been my choices if I was allowed to choose.
At my FLGS there are no Necron players and one Nid player.
Cannot decide.

Just from reading this it sounds like you want to play Necrons. I would go with them. That will make you THE Necron guy at the FLGS. Also Necrons are great 6th edition. But it depends on your play style. Do you want to swarm over terrain and tear your enemies apart as bugs, or blast them with some crazy supped-up gauss cannons, obliterating them in a wave of energy?

One of the guys in my gaming group runs nids with Tervigons and Termagants making up the bulk of his force. It can be a real pain to play against, especially when the Tervigons are pooping out babies every round without clogging up.

I've been looking into Cron Air and I really like the look of it. Lots of aircraft and warriors and tons of firepower.
I also looked into Nids and the FMC and Tervigons caught my eye. Not sure on Biovores though.

Nidzilla and cron air are both very strong lists, but from experience at my flgs, nidzilla generates a lot less hate from others. When I crack out my hive fleet people seem interested, when my buddy gets or his necrons a lot if people roll their eyes. Not sure if that's a factor for you or not, but there it is.
I'm also heavily biased towards the bugs, so take that as you will.

Go Cron Air. You'll win every single game and lose all your friends.
But the winning part is what matters.
Deldar, Nids, and Tau all have sick builds though. I dunno what you were thinking.

Nidzilla looks awesome on the table, is competitive and other than cron air you can paint each model a little bit different so it doesn't look so monotonous.

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too! |

I would recommend Necrons. If you only want a competitive army, as fast as possible, then flyer spam is probably your best bet, although I might recommend coming up with a slightly more balanced approach if you want to keep the army for any length of time. In any event, I don't think you should play Tyranids. I don't think anyone should. Ever.

Nids and Crons are a much better choice IMO in terms of the look of the army.
I would be tempted to go Nids rather than Crons as they just look way more killy but then Crons also look pretty nice
Can't really help you on what is better to play as I've not played 6th and have never played Crons.

Crons are top tier.
Nids are good with a single build.

We agreed on no ebay because it kept it fair for what we are getting for the price we pay. Its not fair if someone gets s load of stuff for pittance whereas someone else gets their force from the flgs. It just levels the field somewhat.
I'm still not sure on which army. Every time I look at a build I think that's awesome, I want to try it out. Then I see Nids and their cool models and they look stunning. Only downside is the amount of gribblies needed.
My reasons for not choosing Tau are simple... I don't like them that much. The models just don't grab my attention. The same goes for Daemons MEQ and CSM.

You don't have to have huge swathes of models to play Nids. I know it probably doesn't work well in 6th but I used to have a 'stealer list in 4th that had only a few more models in it than a regular MEQ list.

Nidzilla is definitely the way to go, dakkafexes, doom and flyrants with tervigons giving birth to gaunts. Start with the tervigons as it will give you a massive bonus in the early games as you could easily get a couple of hundred extra points in a 500-1000pts game and it will make a huge difference. As the points increase i would suggest the doom in a pod, flyrants and then dakkafexes or trygons. That many monstrous creatures is super intimidating, looks great on the table, and works amazingly well.
