Subject: Spartacus - Liam McIntyre or Andy Whitfield
I bring to you a question that the wife and myself have been chatting about all day as we re-watch the 1st season of Spartacus. It has to do with the quality of the show/acting during the 1st season Vs. the 2nd season when Liam McIntyre took over for Andy Whitfield after his untimely death.
My opinion is that the show is great and Liam McIntyre has done his best to portray Spartacus as Whitfield would have but he just lacks that certain something Whitfield had that made the 1st season so special. Whereas my wife thinks the show is still pretty good but is not as drawn in by McIntyre as she was by Whitfield.
What is your opinion Dakka?

Yeah, I don't know that they should have cancelled the show per se but Liam Mcintryre simply has no charisma or prescence at all, nothing like what Andy Whitfield had. And Andy wasn't exactly, like, an Oscar winning actor to begin with - I think they might have called the talent scouting over a little prematurely.

Neither - they're both losers. You want Spartacus? You get Kirk fething Douglas.

This. I felt like Whitfield could project the intensity of his character effectively. Mcintryre is kind of like some stunt double who is standing around waiting for the actual actor to show up. he's not bad but he just can't do it like Whitfield had it going.
I liked Whitfield better but he was far from the reason I watched the show as I much prefer the other actors (Batiatus, Gannicus, Lucretia, Glaber etc.) on there. I am rather curious about Crassus...

I think we all have a case of "you never forget your 1st doctor". In a way he will never be what we expect out of spartacus. I do like him but I think what season 1 had that got me hooked was the gladiatorial setting and the political maneuvering that made me look back to Rome (a great show) on HBO.

In a few episodes time Liam will have played Spartacus for longer than Andy ever did, so I get a real ACDC vibe from those who say he isn't as good as the original.
I think he's doing fine. I like him in the role and I don't base my opinion of the show on who's playing the lead.
Wait, just because he played the character in more episodes means he was better?
I get the gist of what you mean in that it's really more of an ensemble piece, but it is his name on the tin. And, I'm not saying he's awful, because he isn't, but he seems a lot blander, for lack of a better word.

That being said in last weeks episode, the little aside he made to that lady after he stabbed her husband with the spear, he's getting better. I felt a little warmth almost.

Agreed with what most people here have already said. Liam Mcintryre has very little charisma compared with Andy Whitfield. I really struggled with Vengence because there was this gaping Andy shaped hole in the show. Thankfully after the 4th or 5th episode I'd largely gotten over this and began to enjoy it, but I still miss Andy.

I had read ahead a little and was willing to give LM a go, sad as I was that AW left (Why by the way?? Anyone know?) I felt therefore after a couple of episodes that, just like everyone else has said, LM was just flat compared to AW. He's improved as its gone on, but he's no AW. Anyone else get fed up of the same overacting in Season 3 btw? leap off building in the nick on time, swing sword, slo-mo kill, swing sword, slo-mo kills, etc etc
13'000 points ish (13/3/9) Approx 80 points of Skorne!!!
Tried watching the show (work had given me a three episode dvd for some promotion), was pretty excited.
First 20 minutes of the first episode had three sex scenes, not that it's a bad thing to see sex but really? Totally erased any desire I had to watch the rest of it.

Everyone says the same thing about Spartacus. Just get past the first three episodes and everything falls into place.
Yeah, they had initially held back development of season 2 for him to get treatment, instead they did the prequel season to flesh out more characters. Soon as he was about to start filming the second season after his treatment, the cancer came back and a few months(even a few weeks, I think) later, he passed. I remember it being so tragically sudden.
I never watched any of the later seasons, as I just couldn't picture anyone else with that role. Which was strange, because I used to be annoyed at folks who said they never want to see anyone else play The Joker, after Heaths performance. Its crazy how we can get emotionally attached to certain actors.
