With varying degrees of success here on Dakka with my Valhallans, Iron Warriors, and Crimson Fists, P&M Blogs, I thought I'd return to the fold with Dark Angels. I had a mess of em from Dark Vengeance sets, so I figured I'd paint a bunch up and see where it took me.

I've started painting up my first squad of Tactical Marines. I've primed them with Army Painter's Angel Green and washed most of them black; next I'll clean up that shading and begin highlights before moving on to details and so on.

You may notice they're on blank plastic rounds. These are temporary, as this is my first army that will be using exclusively resin bases. Here's a shot of a test base:

These are the Desecrated Lands bases from Dragonforge.

I might paint some more of these guys today, but I've got a hobby day going tomorrow where I'm sure to make some good progress!

Ugh... I wish I had done Army Painter DA primer. Doing all the priming, THEN the base coats is taking forever.

Looking forward to you getting those special characters done!

These guys are gonna get touched up with Angel Green, then I'll highlight said green before moving onto their eyes, bolters, and company markings on their kneepads. After them I'll either do 10 more Marines or start on Terminators. I figure it'll be a ogod test run for your Belial!

I'll see to actually doing legit special characters - for the Independent Characters' Hobby Progress Challenge I'll be painting up the Dark Vengeance characters as counts-as Azrael and Ezekiel, but I can't wait to get to em. Also, the Army Painter primer is absolutely wonderful! I've probably got lung cancer now, but they're very, very easy to use once you follow the directions on the can.

Just working more on the tactical squad. Trying to do the highlights + extreme edge highlights that 'Eavy Metal does and seeing how that turns out. This is basically how the green will look on everything in the army, reds and bones are just started.

Closing in on completion on the squad; just waiting on a couple paints to show up in the mail and I'll get to putting them on their resin bases and such. Here's just another WIP shot; showing the overall progress on the squad. The metals, whites, and bone have since been finished, and the reds are mostly done.

Wrapped up the first Tactical Squad! I was originally going to go with 5th Company markings, but the quartered heraldry was problematic.

I'm not normally a fan of red bolsters on DA, but yours look really good! Well done!

These guys are looking really good, looking forward to how you go on from here!

Quick question, on the shoulder pads, is it a black wash you have used to create the darker areas?? Many thanks.

Thanks guys!

Spuj - the models were primed with Army Painter's Angel Green spray (basically the same color as GW's Caliban Green) and then washed with Nuln Oil in the recesses and around details. I then brought up those areas to Angel Green again and left the darker color the recesses before highlighting. It's a simple way to get some really effective shading, especially on these models!

Ah brilliant, thanks very much. I've been applying washes after painting the models and I haven't been getting the look I was looking for, I think washing before is where I have been going wrong so again thank you!

Whats next on the paint list?

I've got some Deathwing Terminators. The bone color is down (thanks, Army Painter colored primer!) and I put down the black base for the metallics and such, but I've been sidelined working on a new cartoon so they're not my top priority right now.

So I took a month and change off, but I'm back in the painting game! I've finished up the first 5 Deathwing Terminators:

The detail on these models is absolutely insane; for the sergeant, chainfist, and assault cannon dudes, it was like painting character models.

Thanks! I might take another month off from this blog since I got distracted by the Goliaths I just got in
I think I might work on the first 3 Ravenwing next. I just know I definitely don't want to work on Terminators again so soon since these guys were exhausting!

Well, like I said I took some time to paint Goliaths, but I've started up some Ravenwing bikers:

I swapped out the chainsword for a power maul on the sergeant.

Got the next tactical squad primed and good to go. Would prime bikes and do those instead, but it's entirely too hot/humid to even think about priming stuff today.

So you may not have been able to see it in the primed photo, but I converted the sergeant in this squad. Anyway, I finished the lot of them!

So here's how I do my bases. I use bases from Dragonforge, and prime them grey:

Next, I paint the skulls using Army Painter's Skeleton Bone color:

The whole thing gets an Agrax Earthshade wash:

Which is followed up by a Dawnstone drybrush:

Finally, I paint the base rim in Rhinox Hide. It takes two modestly-thinned coats to do it:
