My friends and I currently are making Space Marine armies, and all of us are making our own chapters. But, one of my friends plays Grey Knights, and currently hasn't painted them. And I'm curious, can Grey Knight models be painted so they represent a successor chapter, such as the Exorcists? And if they can, would he be able to paint them as a chapter he created?

Sure thing. You can paint your minis as you wish. Keep in mind though that if you write background to your chapter, they CANNOT be Grey Knights successors, because GK dont have them.

That's actually what I was asking, if my friend can create his own Grey Knight successors - all the Exorcists marines I've seen were under Codex: Space Marine armies, and that's the closest thing to a Grey Knight successor chapter I could think of.

I've seen people paint up GK differently and the results are interesting. As long as your opponent knows what he's up against (GK or basic Marines using GK parts) then you should be fine.

Converting and painting is absolutely ok, but fluff-wise it is impossible to make a GK successor chapter, as far as I know.

The Exorcists are stated as being a successor to the Grey Knights in a few 40K lore sites I've looked at.

I would go with the above.

The exorcists are not a successor chapter to the grey knights, they are a codex astartes chapter that prioritize demon slaying. Because of this, there are rumors of occurences that the grey knights have recruited from the exorcists in the past.

Its a game. You can paint them any way you want.
As long as the model is representative of the Codex your using no one should have any problems with it.
As for the fluff...rather than call it a succesor Chapter just create a story-line where they are a small, elite, sub unit of the GKs fighting chaos in a specific system/sector. Or they are in disguise.
Regardless, its your army and as long as its WYSIWYG no one worth playing will make a fuss over a different/creative paint scheme.
I've seen shades of metal, silver to boltgun to bronze/gold.
There are some excellent armies painted in shades of gray.
I've seen purple and blue. For myself I've been doing mine as a Samurai conversion and painting them red.

You can paint them however you like, and use them as either Grey Knights or any other Space Marine chapter.
But, please don't try to claim that they are a successor chapter to Grey Knights. I've seen way too many horribly written fluff pieces trying to justify those things.
My own GKs are being painted in a purple color scheme (I always wanted to do a Hawk Lords army, just can't afford all the Thunderhawks )

I actually play a chapter of Space Marines & Chaos Marines that has their own fluff, my friend's the one that's playing Grey Knights.

Thats not what the Lexicanum website has listed. http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Exorcists#.UQ4dBGt5mK0. Yes it is a fan based wiki site, but it is generally the most accurate collection of GW fluff from multiple sources and media.

No they should not be, I would have no interest in playing against such an abomination, but then again its you and your friend who has to deal with having said army.

I trust that is sarcasm...

I painted & play the tiny allied GK contingent I have as Exorcists which are a mish-mash of GK & SM components
