I read in the rule book that vehicles can't be a scoring unit. I was just wondering if I took a Land Speeder as part of a Ravenwing Attack Squad with Sammael in the army, would it supersede the core book and make that Land Speeder a troop choice/scoring unit? I've heard people go both ways on it and would like to get more info/thoughts about it. Thanks.

This is something I was interested in knowing as well.

The BRB is explicit that vehicles can not score.

The only specific exceptions are 'The Big Guns Never Tire' where they specifically say all Heavy Support choices score (Even if it is a vehicle), and 'The Scouring' where they specifically say all Fast Attack choices score (Even if it is a vehicle).

And hence if you have Sammael the example land speeder would not score in the Scouring, but it would if you didn't take Sammael.

BRB explicitly states that if a troop choice is a vehicle, it is not scoring.

Page 123, right side.

There are a few exceptions, however, when a unit of troops does not count as a scoring unit:

* If it is a vehicle, or it is a unit currently embarked on a Transport vehicle, or is occupying a building
...

It makes it a troop choice, sure, but that's all it does, and we know that a troop choice vehicle cannot score.

So no, your troop choice vehicle is not scoring.

And like Flinty says, it'll even ruin your scoring potential in some scenarios.

Yes. That's exactly it.

If you have the spare fast attack slots in a Ravenwing army, its a good idea to put typhoons in the fast attack slot (as they're more likely to survive a game thanks to their range) and aggro speeders (twin flamer, twin melta, tornadoes) in the troops section.

unless I'm sorely mistaken, he ALLOWS you to buy them as troops... you can still get them from their proper slot even if you want him in your army. So getting him doesn't *ruin* your Land Speeders. Only the ones you get as troops.

Sadly, no, they are troops only and can't be taken as FA anymore.

Indeed. So all Speeders taken as part of a RAS become troops, and therefore are never scoring. Ones taken as a RSS can score in the Scouring.

Huh, right you are. I was sure my Castellan Crowe was "may be taken as..." but no. "in an army that includes X, Y are troop choices" seems to be the format.

Not that it ruins stuff for me, but you're right, it does for the Ravenwing if that's the same premise.

erm, THe land speeder is an upgrade option for the Ravenwing squadrons once they are maxed out. THey aren't bought just as individual troop choices and thus take up no slot. THey can still be taken in the fast attack slot along with the troop choice upgrade. The troop choice upgrade just brings a single speeder, the fast attack option lets you take a squadron.

5th edition was like that. The new 6th edition books force them to be troops.
