I disagree OP is looking for a fun, unexpected army that can be effective.

So I recommend a monster army, these packs in as many war sphinx, necro sphinx and other monsters as possible.

So along the lines of:
HLP, lvl4, Earthing Rod 235
Tomb Prince, Warsphinx, Fiery Roar 330
16 Archers, Musician (LP Bunker) 106
5 Horse Archers 70
5 Horse Archers 70
5 Horse Archers 70
5 Horse Archers 70
5 Horse Archers 70
5 Horse Archers 70
Warsphinx, Fiery Roar 230
Warsphinx, Fiery Roar 230
Necrosphinx, Envenomed Sting 225
Heirotitan 175
1951
49 points level for items for the prince, 5 monsters tons of chaff/redirectors speedbumps in the horses, could even do 10 man skeleton warriors as crumble no longer allows overun per the new FAQ if I am not mistaken. Or swap some horse archers with a unit of 4 chariots with flaming banner clocks in around 250.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Nothing but Ushabti and Screaming Skulls sitting at as close your edge as possible. And just pew pew.

That is actually pretty cool, 20 skeleton archer lines at the front, bowshatbi behind them like 2 units of 8 or more, screaming skulls, casket maybe even some Colossus with Desert Bows, Khatep in a bunker in the middle just throwing dice at big smiting bubble:

Khatep 330
20 Skeletal Archers, Musician 130
20 Skeletal Archers, Musician 130
17 Skeletal Archers, Musician 112 (Khatep Bunker)
5 Skeleton Horse Archers 70
5 Skeleton Horse Archers 70
8 Ushabti, Musician, Standard, Great Bows 420
8 Ushabti, Musician, Standard, Great Bows 420
SSC 90
SSC 90
Casket 135
1997

114 S3 shots and 32 S6, hitting on 5s so 38 S3 hits and 11 S6 hits, plus Catapults and Casket, I love it too bad Ushabti are so expensive money wise.

I can't remember but can you give KB to ranged attacks? My thought is no. If you could giving it to Ushabti or Colossus would be spiffy. Otherwise, a lot of the Nek spells are a bit wasted. You're not moving or KBing and hopefully not rezzing much.

Close combat only per the rulebook unless it has been FAQed, but the way the Cursed Blades spell is written it specifies close combat as well, unless that has been FAQed too.
