I'd definately consider this for your gems to start with, it will add indefinately more! Patience and practice bro.

You can also edge highlight all your panels too. I don't has a neat picture like Sphynx though.

I'm not a great painter either - But google edge highlighting and you might get an idea, brighting your colours towards white at the extremeties of a model can look really effective. Works on any surface. Also consider contours, like painting raised up areas naturally whiter giving lower areas the illusion of shadow.

Also, the black between the plates it pretty harsh =) Next time try putting some dark (blue) wash between them by touching your brush to it. It should run right along the grooves on its own.
