I'm relatively new to 40k, and even newer to chaos.
Running through the chaos dex, and saw possessed in there. They look sweet, but on paper, they don't look very good.
Say I wanted to run a fluff heavy wordbearers army, would the possessed be worth the points cost?
On a secondary note, are cultists any good? Automatically Appended Next Post: By "they look sweet" I mean they are visually appealing. To clarify

Not really for a few reasons, main one is their powers are random.
The other main one is they are a melee unit in a game dominated by shooting, it makes getting them in combat in a reasonable time difficult, every turn they arnt in combat they are just wasteing points.
Take them for fluff if you must but don't take large squads.

^agreed. Btw cultists are great. Dont expect them to make their points back in kills, but 30 wounds in 5+, 4+ (or 2+ if there behind a defence line, going to ground) cover saves over an objective is a lot tougher then 10 power armour wounds. That and I find they make good meat shields to protect my vindis, forgefiends, preds etc from assaults.

I've tried possessed but they are really useless in my opinion. Cultists however are perfect. These Little bastard have saved many objectives for me and Held them.

no, they are pretty awful. The models are nice, use them to convert champions, chosen or regular CSM.
if you want to run a fluff heavy wordbearers army, I still wouldnt take them. I would take fabuluos bill and consider his enhanced warriors to be possessed marines. O and word bearers love cultists and dark apostles.
You could put a squad of possessed in a landraider with dirge caster. Still it isnt going to win you any tournaments

They're ok but they are a bit of a glass hammer in comparison to what else you could get for example: Terminators with a 2+ save for 5 pts more which take twice as much small arms fire to kill, which for those 5 pts they cannot sweeping advance but get a shooting weapon and always has a power weapon. They just don't compare
I actually asked this question about a week ago, incorrectly compared them to spawn but still.

I dsay they can be good it just requires you thinking about how your gonna be setting up the unit Im going to be playing Wird Bearers myself so I will be including a unit at some point. Will probably take a unit of 9 and attach a Dark Apostle to them (who is ironically also my warlord) plopthem in a raider and jobs a good un. Also if your running a fluffy word bearers list its best to have a Dark Apostle as your warlord with a Sorceror or Chaos Lord as first acolyte. Also stay away from bezerkers 1k sons plague marines noise narines oblits mutilators warp talons and the daemon engines if you want to do a proper fluffy word bearers army

If there was a cheap, assault vehicle that wasn't the Land Raider. I could say they would be useful.
As it is, no.
Similarly I put berserkers, and any other melee unit in CSM that isn't a counter-charge unit in this category as well.
