Subject: Something I've noticed about the new GW Layer Paints (NOT A COMPLAINT)

I've noticed that some of my pots of paint are extremely thick, and almost like a gel, and require heavy dilution to avoid really bad streaking and brush strokes (Ushabti Bone, Screaming Skull, Squig Orange, Ceramite White).
Has anyone else noticed this with these colors? I've read that the new layer paints "are so watery" and then there are these, so I was just wondering if maybe I got "bad" pots. I have to water them down to avoid brush strokes that it's almost a glaze consistency! To deal with coverage issues for my Deathwing what I'm doing now is drybrushing the Ushabti Bone and then smoothing out the gritty look by doing a thin layer of ushabti over it...

Ceramite White is a base colour, so it should be thicker (but not gel-like), but if the layers are thick you may have some bad pots or you need to shake them well.

Thin it out with a bit of water and Vallejo Glaze Medium or P3 Mixing Medium and you'll find that your paint is a lot more mobile and the thickness to it goes away.
I dunno what it is about Citadel brand paints, but I swear they don't put enough medium into them at the plant.
I've found that about 3 drops of Vallejo medium for enough paint to basecoat a terminator (and about an equal amount of water) is enough. Makes it nice and milk-like in consistency, but experiment with it yourself to see what you find best.

I only have a few of the new ones, but like always they are too thick and I water it down anyway.

Are they sealing properly when you close them? The lids and rims need regular cleaning to get rid of the paint build up. I found I had the exact same issue until I cleaned everything up and added a few drops of water to the bad pots. They've been fine ever since.
Also I popped a little chunk of sprue in each of the pots to act as a stirrer when I shake them up (thanks Dakka for that one!). Seems to work well. And finally I tend to give all of my paints a good shake at least once every few days, even if I am not painting. Only takes 2 minutes but keeps them nice and fresh for days.
