Blackadder, just amazing right, I'm just surprised at the amount of people that don't know of its existence.
So Dakka, what are your thoughts on blackadder.
I agree that Blackadder is an amazing show (although the first series isn't as good as the rest). But, like most shows, it had it's time in the limelight (in the early nineties IIRC) when it was all the rage, and is now a cult classic enjoyed by those that watched it when it came out and a select few people interested in that kind of thing.
It's just the standard rise and fall, shows like the Walking Dead will be in the same boat if you wait long enough, and then someone else will discover it long after its time in the spotlight and ask future Dakka why it isn't as popular as it should be...
And that is why you hear people yelling FOR THE EMPEROR rather than FOR LOGICAL AND QUANTIFIABLE BASED DECISIONS FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE MAJORITY!

Reasons why it's not more popular in North America:
1. It aired on BBC in a time before international television was widely available in North America; when few cable providers (if any) offered BBC as an option, and satellite dishes were prohibitively expensive to the average person.
2. The BBC never made a large push to sell the DVD collection internationally.

I grew up on Black Adder thanks to PBS. PBS broadcast it for a few years during the 90s. I also grew up with Monty Python, Are You Being Served?, Are You Being Served, Again?, Last of the Summer Wine, Red Dwarf, Keeping Up Appearances, Mr. Bean, Thin Blue Line, One Foot In The Grave, The Good Life, Vicar of Dibley, Fawlty Towers, As Time Goes By, Open All Hours, 'Allo 'Allo, The Brittas Empire, To The Manor Born, Waiting For God, and I'm sure others.

I got introduced through my dad (And other things like Monty Python)
A lot of people just won't see it because they won't be introduced to it by family and it's hardly on TV partially because most younger people now want unchallenging things like geordie/jersey shore etc

I wonder what other very popular when aired comedy series seem to have been forgotten. For instance what is the relative popularity of say Dad's Army, Rising Damp and Black Books?
PBS never aired Black Books or Father Ted -- but they're beloved among a certain crowd in the US. My all time favorite scene from any sitcom is when Dougal is driving the milkfloat towards the cardboard boxes.
Black books was great. The episode where they house sit for their rich 'friend' and end up poisoning the pope is sheer class.

It was a Saturday night tradition for years with some friends and myself to watch The Red Green Show, Blackadder, Red Dwarf, and Dr Who back to back.
My wife didn't quite know what to think when I first introduced her to the show, but now likes it fairly well.

They did have Father Ted on here in Utah a few years back. The thing I remember most about it was that ship stuck out in the middle of a field.

Blackadder's a favorite of mine I revisit now and then. I've gotten a fair number of other people hooked. Usually via the fourth season. My lead in? "Hey did you know Hugh Laurie's a comedic actor?"
