I know when the new Chaos Space Marine codex came out, the Limited Edition sold out in under twelve hours. I wasn't paying attention when the Dark Angels were released, but I imagine between the two releases enough people have to come to realize what a blatant ripoff these things are and have held back for this iteration.
The only differences being the fake leather cover binding, the painted page ends, a weak threaded bookmark, and, oh almost forget, the enveloped letter that informs you that you are, indeed, a sucker, and that certainly can't be enough to justify almost a 100% markup in price, especially when the pages are exactly the same.
Compare them to the LE BRB, which was actually pretty nice. It put the BIG in the BRB. The paper stock was thick and the bookmark didn't come across as flimsy like the ones in the codices. It really has that tome like feel to it, and I'm still pretty happy with mine. I'm not putting mine out on the coffee table or anything, but it's still pretty impressive.
That said, how many of you plan on buying any more LE codices in the future? Maybe just the LE for 'your' army whenever it's released, or, perhaps, some of you are gluttons for punishment and are afflicted with the collector's mentality and just have to 'have em all?' Personally, I think I'm done with 'em, but maybe, just maybe, I'll pick up the Space Marines one, as that one would be for 'my' army.
What are you guys thinking?

Seeing as I likely have several years before the IG get updated, it's not a pressing subject, but I have zero interest in the LE codexes.
I don't care about fancy covers, and I get royally screwed with books already in university, I have no interest in voluntarily accepting an almost doubled price for a cover.
Besides, the regular codexes have actually been fairly decent looking with solid cover art, I see no desire to pay $40 to replace it.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

Oh wow, literally double the cost for...a slightly nicer cover.
And a letter.
Hell, the normal one looks just as good anyways.

So first you say that anyone who buys one is a "sucker"... Then ask who is buying them? Then you go on to say that "maybe" you will buy one, hence making you a sucker too.
Just so I have that right.
Anyway, no I won't be buying any of these. I am much to abusive of my gaming books to buy them in special editions and see them beat to Hell.

I very rarely buy a special edition of anything, and when I do its usually only about $5-$10 more than the regular version and actually contains something significant over the regular edition.
These don't actually offer much and definitely not for double the price, especially when I like the regular version more anyway.
Now, if they came with a limited edition mini you couldn't get else where fir this same price I might consider it. It would be cool if the limited edition came with an alternate sculpt of the corresponding Herald.

Oh, if it wasn't implied in my post already, I'll admit that I most definitely am one of the 'suckers,' having bought the CSM LE when it was released. And being a fan of your show, and knowing just how much GW product you purchase, you're right there with me!
And it's not so much a swipe at the people buying them, as it is towards GW putting out this product, with the main difference being a new cover and an enveloped letter as compared to the LE BRB, and charging twice as much for it. What do they think we are?
Anyway, looking forward to checking out ep 73. I've been making some decent hobby progress lately, listening to you and Geoff do your thing.

To be honest, the LE BRB quality is what all the books should be. The paper is so much nicer and the binding much tougher.

I can barely justify paying £30 for the regular codex let alone forking out £55 for one with a fancy cover.

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

I'd like to point out that we pay upwards of £20 for a troops choice consisting of 10-ish plastic models. Out entire armies could be considered collectables, so It's absolutely no surprise to me that people buy collectors runs of the books.
I'm nowhere near well-off enough to buy them, but if I had the income, I'd buy every Limited/Collectors item I could get my hands on.

I have trouble enough justifying the cost of a standard codex, let alone forking out for a ltd edition one that'll be worth little in about 5 years. Not really buying either type at the minute TBH.
I'm a real sucker for ltd's as well - if that vinyl has a £5 more coloured gatefold, I'm all over it. Just don't see the point with an item like a codex which gets superseded in a couple of years.
At the end of it, I think, its just that I consider them not worth the money asked in either normal or ltd editions. And I'm not really one to hold back on the cash when I really want something.

Wondering Why the Emperor Left

I gladly buy LE models, but will never by LE books in their current incarnations. I'd buy a cheaper soft cover book given the chance.
Why are they making LE books anyway? GW has defended their shoddy rules many times by stating that they are a miniatures company first and the game (books) is just a vehicle to sell the minis.

Paying extra for a nicer book that your going to carry around for the next...4 years or more. I understand paying a little more for a better book as well as having something that stands out a little bit more from the crowd.
And how is spending that much on a book any more or less silly then spending that kind of money on plastic soldiers?

The plastic soldiers have a lifespan of a very long time, whereas the book is only of use for 6-7 years at the most? Every game I play, I'm still using the metal body/plastic arms space wolf army I bought in 1993ish and will still be using them for years to come. Even though I still have my second ed codex I've not used it since '98.

The only limited edition I'll ever buy is of the main rules. Because they are usually cool and I can let it sit on a shelf looking pretty.

This.
If they had actually done a quality cover with a Daemon from each god in the same quality as the bloodletter for the limited editions I would have been tempted. I actually prefer the standard edition aesthetically. The LE are quite underwhelming.
