Okay so this came up today and we weren't sure what the right call was.

So I blew up my friend's Leman Russ Battle Tank. The resulting penetration caused an explosion. There were multiple units in the ruin right behind it on various levels. I know that with template weapons you have to choose what floor you're attacking. Does the same apply to explosions from vehicles? Or no, because it's not a blast/template/barrage weapon? The way we played it was that anything within the explosion range was hit regardless of level.

Right call? Would certainly appreciate BRB page numbers if there is proof to the contrary, thanks!

Seems correct to me. Explosions from vehicles also don't deal double damage to Swarms. Despite their radius-of-effect, they are not true templates or blast markers, and aren't subject to the rules for them. (Now that I've said this, cue someone else behind me citing a page number for the rule I missed... )

It's not a blast or template being fired at a ruin, so there's no reason to think those rules would apply to it.

You played it right.

its not a template weapon, it has a direction and a range.

Yes it's not a template, merely a radius from the vehicles hull.

just to be clear, you measured from the hall in 3 dimensions, or at an angle right? Because I 1st thought you meant you measured along the ground the radius of the explosion and anything in that radius, regardless of how far off the table got hit.

Vehicle explosions, Shokk Attack gun Explosions and Deathstrike missles don't use a marker and cause hits in all three axes.

Make sure that measurments are taken in a direct line. A model that is 5 inches away on the flat axes would not be within 5 inches of the vehicle if it was also on the 2nd floor of a building.

yeah, we did 3D measurements, not straight line.

"3D measurements" should mean straight line, model to model, which will be an angle upwards if we're measuring from the hull of a vehicle at ground level up to a unit on the second or third floor of a ruin. NOT measuring just horizontally on a flat plane.
