However I am not glad about the painful judging I just had to do.

For sheer scale and definitely keeping to the spirit of the competition theme of "lids"
He Also disguised all of his lids perfectly, which is VERY hard to do with recognizable household containers.
Vik's little surprise grot ambush scene unfolding behind was the icing on the cake...
And then Vik demonstrated some serious improvement to his painting skills with the textures and the tesla thing.
Congratulations Vik! Damn fine work sir!

I have to admit..My personal tastes were pleased with this build, Necromunda....blue...hazard stripes..All earned him points.
But the character he put into this is amazing! It could seriously sit on MY Necromunda Table and fit in completely!
The Lids were completely disguised as well.
The Ramp is amazingly done, it makes the piece!
Skalk's painting skills have also reached a new amazing level!
You would have taken first place from Vik, but I thought the fantastic rust was just slightly overdone, too much of that lovely weathered blue covered up IMHO.

Max, you are the undisputed KING of plasticard scratching! The use of the milk cap lids as rotor housings is ingenious!
.And THEN you go and create an amazing new design that fits perfectly into the 40k aesthetic!
For your virgin attempt at painting, you did a great job, however your fear of the paint shows. You have the ability, and the talent, but you aren't giving it the time you need to really make it shine.
The teeth o nthe nose are PERFECT! It took me 16 attempts to paint teeth on my Vakryie!, But you should take the time to give it extra coats and a few highlights! -Had you done that, you would have taken 2nd easily.

For sheer innovation and disguise of lids! I cannot tell by looking at the finished job what lids you used, at all. Brilliant conversion work man!
However, like Max, I think you rush painting to get it over with. Take a little longer, push yourself a bit more, However the Hazard Stripes are VERY, VERY well done! Perhaps more work blending the structure into your excellent base with some flock or debris or something.

Shas, the concept is BRILLIANT, the hatch and the rivets are amazing!
The Purity Seal is soo excellent, that it leaves the rest of the build behind though a bit I'm afraid.If you could put that same standard of excellence in painting into the rest of the paintjob..you could not be stopped! I think you should thin your paints more to eliminate brushstrokes and transparency in places.

If this contest were for the best painted piece of terrain, you would win man!
The weathering, the chipping and highlighting are ACE! You REALLY have some talent here bud!
However, the lid isn't very well camouflaged, and I really think you could have done better with the overall composition, or the layout of the whole piece.

Dood, the slime effect, and the painting of the putrid ooze is fantastic! It really does work quite well, and you seem to know how to put it on to really show it is flowing and oozing, and making unholy fart sounds!
However, The rest of the building lets you down here, it's built excellently and aesthetically pleasing, but it's not much more than a LOS blocker in game terms, it needs more platforms, ladders, walkways, etc. It needs to be more game friendly, but stil lan excellent piece!


Guys, this is why I hate judging, but there it is! I hope everyone learned something from all of this, that is the point. I am very proud to have seen all your excellent work!

Congrads to Vik and all that entered! It was a lot of fun to work on this project 'with you' so to speak. I've grown a lot as a modeler in the last couple months with a lot of help / advice from a lot of you. Whatever project I do next will reflect the techniques I've been practicing and the skills I have learned.

I was wondering if the rust was too much. My biggest challenge was weathering the blue, because honestly I'd have preferred to have kept more 'blue' as well, I just had no idea how to weather it w/o it looking like it was soaked in Griffon Sepia or Badab Black. What I wanted was a chipped and 'rust spotted' look, and I openly admit I have no idea how to even start that. I'm requesting advice from anyone that knows how to do what I'm trying to achieve, or could point me in the right direction. . If I learn this technique I'll revisit my contest piece and post updated pics on my terrain thread.

I'm looking forward to the next LoER contest and hope to see it continue on in the future. We have an impressive collection of skilled modelers all sharing ideas and techniques. I truly feel the community we have created is what Dakka Dakka is all about.

many, many, many thanks ! seeing skalks work i was sweating all over...i am a little lost for words atm... i didn´t really thought i could win against so many cool scratchbuilders and painters... be sure that this result will be the first thing in the morning to tell my wife and kids... i think they will be very proud of me.... they jept asking when the comp is finished... and where waiting for the final say as anxious as me^^

and as skalk already put it... yep... that friendly competition was something i enjoyed immensly... seeing the other projects develop in time discussing the latest updates... added with the occaisional banter... yes...that is why i am so dakka addicted!!!

also... seeing new fellas here like LDK and others that have done a sterling new impression here... i hope to see your ambitious work in the next run too!

"You must scratch build some terrain feature utilizing every different material you get after consuming a package of cookies...so foil, wrappings, container...whatever the range of cookies you prefer, you have to use a recognizable amount of the different materials thereof...
1. It must be based
2. You must provide at least 1 WIP photo, which makes it CLEARLY obvious it is built from coockiepackage materials (other additional materials are of course allowed) and at least 1 completed photo to be eligible.
3. It must be painted.
4. The deadline is September 4th, 2012.

-ALL Dakka Registered users are welcome to enter! Entry is as simple as Posting your work here on this thread.

-You may feel free to post running WIP shots here if you wish, or you may choose to keep it a secret and just taunt your opponents with banter, your choice.

-On September 5th I will judge the winner, who will be rewarded with a true LoER gem specially crafted for this occasion by me!, The winner gets to set the parameters (and optional fabulous prize) for the next competition as well as become the judge for the next competition after he/she wins. The Judge does not have to stick to a material like I am, you instead may choose a theme such as "bunkers" or "sandbags" or whatever you wish within reason.

-Judges are not eligible to participate in the contest that they are judging...EVER. Judges set their own judging criteria on a per-competition basis. The Judge's decision is FINAL, feel free to Complain about it all you like, but know that it won't make any difference
