I see what you're saying. I guess I'm looking from the perspective if the quality of paint jobs I see across from me on the table, rather than the high end painting competitions type paint jobs. I suppose what I'm saying is that your 'basic' is above the average table top stand I see.

Assassin looks look. I like how the white face plate really catches the eye.

@edc: i feel you, mate...
it is a very nice compliment...
i just give the mini the paint job that it is calling for...

well, after the death of my laptop last week, i am back in action with a new one...
now i just need to learn how to edit pics on it...
i got close today, but i'm just winging it right now...

catching up with more of October's work, here is the LotD multi-melta Marine...
i love this weapon...
it looks like it means business!!!

hopefully, this guy is blasting Eldar tanks off of the table right now...

two more bolter Marines to show, and then the squad shot...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like him...

Another fantastic LotD model. You're almost single handedly making me want to do a squad of those of my own.

Good to have you updating again.

@EDC: this is actually one set of models, at least in the beat-up way that i'm painting them, where Finecast hasn't really been an issue, which is a nice change...
any little bubbles just end up looking like dings from battle...
the three weapons that wouldn't stay straight were a bummer, but the sword on the first Sgt. was the only one that i replaced...
the two guns that are still slightly banana stylee look less drastic with paint on them...
it's been a ton of fun painting these guys, especially after daydreaming about it for a couple of decades...

here is the first bolter Marine of the second Legion of the Damned squad...
nothing special here, just another body to fill out the squad...
i have been having adding some age and texture to the leather bits on these guys...
a bit of wear and tear seems a lot more visually interesting that brand new pouches, straps, and holsters...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like him...

Nice. There's something about the beaky mkvi that really suits the two tone look.

@EDC: it's a good look for Raven Guard, too...

here is the final Marine from the Legion of the Damned squad...
these guys are such good sculpts, each with enough individuality, that i am sad to finish this commission, even after ten of these minis...
that's always nice...

i'm a big fan of the box mag on this guy's bolter...

next up, the squad photo!!!

@nerdfest: thanks,mate...
you have been really rocking with some great original ideas the last few months...
i'm going to start stealing from you...

@Para: cheers, mate...
too bad i still take rubbish photos:(...

here is the group shot for the Legion of the Damned melta squad...
i had a lot of fun doing the weapon swaps on these guys...
it's always nice to get a chance to make a mini unique from the stock model...

it isn't often that i am sorry to see the end of a commission, after all the hard work that goes into it, but these guys were a rare treat to paint...
i look forward to painting a couple of these guys without the restraints of time, budget, and style...

here is the previous squad, just so you can see them both together...

gorgeous stuff there Jah - they really have come out beautifully. The use of green for hints and accents was a really top choice - give them a lovely aged and creepy etheral quality.
These guys are all failcast...ahem... finecast figs, aye?
Really great work as ever

cheers, Jan...
indeed, they are all Finecast:(...
luckily, the casts lend themselves nicely to the battle damaged look, since they all come damaged already...

i got my hands on a pot of the Citadel Technical Paint; Nihilakh Oxide...
it is quite a nice verdifris effect paint for bronze...
it does the job even better than my custom mix :(...
i'll definitely be using it on my bronze from here on out, except for the Ultras, which need to match the work that has already been done...

i tried it out on the Black Crusade RPG commission Sorcerer of Nurgle...
i really like the bright tone this paint has, which counteracts the chalkiness that it dries with...

please excuse the rubbish, out of focus, pics...
i can already tell that this guy is going to be tough to photograph when he's done...

thanks for looking...

thanks, guys...

here is a quick tabltop quality step-by-step for glowing eyes...
i've used green here, but any bright color will work...
all the paints are Privateer Press P3 colors...

i start with a solid coat of Thamar Black inside the eye sockets...

next, i paint Gnarls Green over the black...

the next layer, pure Iosan Green, is painted over the eyeballs, and around the sockets...

next, a layer of pure Necrotite Green goes over the Iosan Green...

this is finished with a 2-1 mix of Necrotite Green and Morrow White...

your paints can be thinned as much or as little as you like, depending on how strong or subtle you would like the glow to be...
for the tabletop, where the minis will be viewed from a few feet away, i like to go a bit heavy on the glow...

thanks for looking...
i hope this is helpful...

@EDC: this new plastic Termie Libby is a nice showcase for the GK Librarian scheme, with the big cloak and loincloth to paint...

@Januine: that is actually my P3 Arcane Blue glow mix, but i did see someone use the Nihilakh Oxide for the glow the day after you posted, and it looks really good...
very quick way to do the job...

@Para: cheers, bud...

here is a first look at the helmets of the next Chaos Space Marines in the Black Crusade RPG commission...
this is the Tzeentch Sorcerer, and his Rubric bodyguard...

i still need to do some work on the eyes, and the gold needs a highlight, but i wanted to show off the feathers...
the blue on purple works better than i thought it would...
i had planned to throw some grey highlights on last, but i like the look too much to tone it down...

sorry for the absence, all...
i have been slacking on posts, but not on painting...

@Zambro: cheers, mate...
the helmets are from the Russian Tzeentch Marine set...
it is easy enough to find good pics of the set on Google...

@Paradigm: thanks...
i am having a harder time getting the striking contrast on the legs, but it's a fun challenge...

@ishkatar: thanks, dude...
you have been doing some really nice work, too...
i have a review planned of the My Way Minitures TMNT set soon...
such a great little diorama!!!

@Red Harvest: the Showgirls are being worked on behind the scenes, at the moment, but pics are coming soon...
Colette is a ton of fun to paint...
her new sculpt is SO much better, imho...

i took step-by-step pics of the Terminator Librarian, to document my Grey Knights scheme, and shine a bit more light on how i paint steel...
gold has been pretty well documented so far, but steel hasn't...
this one will show my blue-steel recipe...

first up, the base coats...
all paints, as usual, are P3 paints from Privateer Press...

the steel gets a coat of Pig Iron...
the bits that will be gold, skin, parchment, or yellow get a coat of Battlefield Brown...
anything that will be red gets a coat of Sanguine Base...
the bookmark, loincloth, and cape get a coat of Exile Blue...

to add some shadow to the mini, i mixed a 1-1 wash of Coal Black and Armor wash, cut with a little water, and slathered it all over...

at this point, it seems i forgot to take pictures of the original base coat colors being reclaimed and neatened up...
just imagine the first set of pics with the shadows of the second set, and you get the idea ...

once the base coats were cleaned up, i got onto the first layers, where i started to work on establishing the contrast...
the armor gets a layer of Cold Steel...
the blues are a 1-1 mix of Exile Blue and Cygnar Blue Base...
the skin gets a layer of Khardic Flesh...
the golds are a mix of 1-1 Battlefield Brown and Rhulic Gold, followed by a coat of pure Rhulic Gold...
the pouches, parchments, and pages get a coat of Gun Corps Brown...
the trim, even though it will be yellow gets a layer of Gun Corps Brown at this point, for ease of coverage...
the book covers and ropes get a layer of Sanguine Base and Khador Red Base at 1-1...
the black soft armor bits (which had been base coated Thamar Black) get a layer of Greatcoat Grey...
finally, the wax seals get a layer of Sanguine Highlight...

at this point, i have finished all of the hard to reach spots, so i can glue the body together...
luckily, this guy goes together without any gaps, so i don't have to do any putty work after i glue the two halves...
next up, i start on the lighter, brighter colors...

thanks for looking...
i hope you find it interesting...

cheers

good grief your brush strokes are so clean.
i really wish i knew how you do layers so cleanly. Unless its just bad paints on my end (citadel, some of which is several months old) whenever i try it its always a very obvious mark left behind that a brush did this and not an airbrush.

hey everybody...
sorry i went MIA there for a month...
i was sick as a dog for two weeks, and then just mentally beat while i was recovering...
i've still been working hard, so there is some cool stuff coming up, but i'll finish the GK step-by-step first...

@Vineneart01: i wish i knew how i get such smooth coats, too...
maybe then it wouldn't feel like such a struggle...
a lot of people use a wet palette to keep their paint wet, but i just dip the brush tip in the paint lid, and then in a drop of water, and mix it on the back of my thumb...
trial and error will teach you what consistency works best for your paint and brush...
always experiment to push yourself...

here is steps four and five for the Grey Knights scheme...

step four is more layering...
the armor gets a layer of P3 Cold Steel and Vallejo Air Aluminium at a 2-1 ratio...
the blue gets a layer of pure Cygnar Blue Base on the raised areas...
the reds get a layer of Sanguine Base and Khador Red Base at 1-3...
the skin gets a layer of Midlund Flesh...
the parchments and pages get a layer of Menoth White Highlight...
the yellow gets a layer of Heartfire...

after all that, everything gets a tinting wash...
the armor gets a blue tone with a few layers of P3 Blue Ink...
the flesh gets glazed with thinned Thornwood Green...
the parchments get a heavy coat of the old GW Ogryn Flesh wash...
the golds get a heavy wash of P3 Flesh Wash and Sanguine Base at 3-1 with a few drops of water...

next up, i will reclaim the basic colors, and start the highlights...
i hope this is helpful...

it is good to be back in action...

i guess it's about time to get March's first post taken care of, and finish this step-by-step...

having done the final tinting washes in the previous stage, this step is all about doing the last clean-up before the finishing highlights...

the armor gets a layer of P3 Cold Steel and Vallejo Air Aluminium at 1-1...
the skin gets a layer of Khardic Flesh...
the parchments get a layer of Menoth White Base...
finally, the gold gets a layer of P3 Rhulic Gold and Vallejo Air Gold at 2-1...

next, i start with the highlights...
the armor is finished with pure Vallejo Air Aluminium...
the cloak and loincloth get hit with Cygnar Blue Highlight...
the reds get some Khador Red Base...
the parchments get hit with Menoth White Highlight...
the skin gets a mix of Midlund Flesh and Ryn Flesh at 1-1...
the yellow trim gets a layer of Heartfire and Cygnus Yellow at 1-1...
the gold get a layer of pure Vallejo Air Gold...
the gems get built up to Khador Red Base...

next up, the final highlights, and arms!!!

thanks for looking...
i hope this has been helpful...
