Once again, I am amazed at how interesting Jah can make just part of a mini! Just a gun and an arm, and it's still superb!

thanks, guys...
always nice to know an experiment worked out...
sadly, this is the only Kakophani in the Black Crusade RPG warband...
many more cool minis in this commission, though...

the next mini in the group is another Forge World piece, the Nurgle Chaos Marine Sorcerer...
i was asked to give him a Raptors jump pack (my first time using one of these cool plastic packs), change his weapons, and sculpt a tail...
i chopped up his glaive, built him a Rod of Corruption, and rebuilt the blade into a sheathed sword at his side...
he is going on another one of the 25mm Dragon Forge Design bases...

next up, i'll show the Greenstuff work...

thanks, guys...
i do love the chance to make a unique mini...

here is the Greenstuff work on the Nurgle Sorcerer...

i wanted to show off the pitted sword on his hip, so i didn't sculpt a full scabbard...
instead, i just gave him a beat up leather loop...

the tail started as a wire armature, and a press-molded Nurgling head (from the one at his feet)...
the bulk of the tail is just a snake of Greenstuff wrapped around the wire, and smoothed some...
after that cured, i filled in the gaps a bit leaving a little variation in thickness to make it look slightly wormy...
then i sculpted some cracked armor plates around the base of the tail, where it broke through his butt-plate...

for the rod, i started with the same snake of Greenstuff, but instead of wrapping it around as is, i flattened it out first, and then wrapped it around the handle...
as this started to cure, i came in with the Exacto blade, and put some nicks and holes in the leather...

now it is time to paint this bad boy!!!

thanks for looking...
i hope you like him...

cheers

Great conversation work, you've made an awesome modell even better.

Has the client requested anything specific for the paint job?

Small changes can make a model look even better when done right Jah! when you see it and you think you know it then something catches your eye and makes you look again and again :-)

Good stuff, and thanks again for the step-by-steps! Even for stuff that should be 'simple' like the leather on the staff is still handy; for instance, I've done some similar stuff before, but not considered doing the nicks and tears like that. Going to have to try that at some point.

@evildrcheese: cheers, mate...
nothing specific...
the scheme is in my hands...

@nerdfest: cheers, mate...
the conversions were all requested by the client...

@Para: cheers, mate...
honestly, when i did the wraps they looked lumpy and horrible, so the nicks and tears just saved what was a visual nightmare...

when designing a custom paint scheme with a client, i like to give a couple of options to choose from...
for this one, i gave a four color sample, using the jump pack...
the first option (on the upper panels) was the darkest, P3 Thornwood Green...
the second (on the left engine cover) is P3 Ordic Olive...
the third (on the right engine cover) is P3 Traitor Green...
the fourth (on the center tank) is a 1-1 mix of Ordic Olive and Traitor Green...
we decided to go with the custom mix...

once the color was chosen, i gave the whole jump pack a base coat of the mix, and then a heavy wash of purple to shade...
after i had heavily tinted the whole base coat, i stippled the original color back on for a rough texture to the paint...
it is Nurgle, after all...

it isn't showing well in the pics, but the steel is also tinted with the purple...
the orange rust separating the green and steel compliments the purple and green tones, and makes a more interesting visual separation between the two elements than a simple black line would...
the highlight is the base coat mix (Ordic Olive & Traitor Green 1-1) and Menoth White Highlight, maybe around 3-1...
i forgot to write it down, so i will have to experiment on the armor to get the mix again...

no battle damage at the moment, but it is still early days yet...
lots more to do!!!

thanks for looking...

cheers
jah

I'd never considered purple wash on a green colour, but that shading is lovely. Consider that tip logged.

cheers, dude...
in the last five years i have moved away from the straight triads of using the same color for base, shade, and highlight...
the idea is to try and use combinations of colors that are more visually interesting...
the same goes for the experiments with textures...
next up, i will be trying out sheer fabrics, and water effects...

it has been quite a while since i did a Throwback Thursday post...
here is a Halloween special...
these are the Bane Thralls that i painted for Privateer Press in 2004...
these guys were painted to go along with Goreshade and the Leviathan that Aly painted for the Escalation rulebook...
green being my favorite color, skulls being a bit of an obsession, and Escalation being the first rulebook to have my work published inside, these guys have a special place in my heart...
it was awesome to be a part of coming up with alternate schemes for the first Warmachine factions, like Feora's battlegroup, and these green Cryx...
this was my first time highlighting black with red, something i will have to try again sometime...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like them...

happy Halloween!!!

i spent the last month knocking out a second Legion of the Damned squad...
this time they are armed with meltas instead of flamers...

the Sergeant comes armed with aplasma pistol, but the client wanted a combi-melta...
unfortunately, i used the combi-bolter body on the first Sergeant, so i had to improvise...
i still had the combi-melta bit from the Tac. Squad box, and some extra bolters, so a few snips with the clippers, and a couple slices with the Exacto later, i had a new gun...
then i just had to cut the hand off of the bolter, so it could be left-handed...

i've used the same scheme and style as the previous squad...
the green power weapons are a nice change from all of the blue ones i've done...

hey Dakka...

here are the two conversions i did on the second Legion of the Damned squad...
since there is no combi-melta armed Sergeant, or melta armed Marine, i had to do a little chop-shop action...

cutting up a bolter was easy enough, but you can see where i went a little too far, and had to use a bit of Greenstuff to fill in the gap that was left near the back of the gun when i fit the melta bit on...

the melta gun Marine was also easy to convert...
cutting the left hand off of the original bolter was the fiddliest bit, but Finecast cuts like butter, so it wasn't difficult...
my client now has a unique squad, with badass tank killing weapons...

thanks for looking...

thank you, dr. (said in a very serious voice)

gotta keep the conversion arts alive...
kids these days, and their grey hordes...
would it kill 'em to do a weapon swap???
hahahahahaha

here is the first progress on the Sorcerer of Nurgle for the Black Crusade commission...
the beat-up armor is so well sculpted...
the most fun i have had painting in a long time...

it is painted with the same mix as the jump pack, a 1-1 mix of P3 Ordic Olive and P3 Traitor Green, shaded with the old GW Leviathan Purple wash...
i forgot what my highlight color was, so i just dove in with some P3 Thrall Flesh...

now i need a cool green-black mummified flesh color, and some purple in the gribbly bits...
then, some purple OSL for the hand and eyes, a bit of verdigrised bronze, and some fun bright greens for the Nurglings...

thanks for looking...
i hope you like him...

@evildrcheese: my basic paint jobs aren't going to win any prestigious awards, so it isn't quite the same as what i can do given freedom from the constraints of time and budget...

@Jehan-reznor: the client told me to give him a tail that shoot spores, so i thought of having the tip be a Nurgling's head...
it isn't the best press-mold i've ever made, but the painting will save it...

here is the first look at the scheme of the female Heretek for the Black Crusade RPG warband commission...
it is nice to get to use my favorite Infinity Nomads sculpt, since i will probably never paint a Nomads army...
i will paint a few of their more irresistible minis for eBay, though...

i am going for a more wicked look to this Mechanicum traitor, with darker reds, as opposed to the dominant white of the Infinity Nomads Revend Custodiers studio scheme...
the coat and loincloth will be a brighter red than the base coat shows, the armor plates will be a nice deep oxblood/Cabernet color, the soft armor black, while the mask will be bone white, as will the freehand spikey Choas star trim on the loincloth, and there will be a bit of blue OSL here and there...

the customer wanted a ritual dagger, instead of the combi rifle she comes with...
you may remember, a few pages back, where i went for the first try at the conversion using the lance tip from the Dark Elf Cold One Knights box...
my customer said it was too big, and i said, "40K is all about too big, over the top, weapons, and it looks awesome!!!"
the customer won...
to tone it down a bit, i went with the blade from the Dark Eldar Kabalite sprue...
the handle is from a Chaos Space Marine combat blade...
i didn't use a guard (quillion) on the handle, which gives the blade a sleeker, more wicked look...

should be a good looking first attempt at a Heretek...

thanks for looking...
