Hi folks, i just got some old assassins models of ebay for my imperial guard army (it's about 50 men strong with 3 heavy weapons teams and a command unit so far) and I was wondering what are the main rules for assasians?

Like how many can you have?

Do you have to have another model to have a assassin?

sorry for the questions but I don't have a copy of any new codex's.

You can't have any in the Imperial Guard codex without using an allied force of Grey Knights.
Getting a codex is a good idea.

Thanks for the feed back, I have 5 of the really old terminator Grey knights with force swords which I can use then to have a assassin.
Are you still limited to just one?

I have the old Angels of Death codex ( I know I should get my hands on some of the new codex's! )

I don't battle that much but I still want my army's to be legal? if you know what I mean?

Assassins are elites so in a GK army you can have 3, but only 1 of each. In an allied army you can have 1.

Annoyingly enough Assassins (and Inquisitors) do not nowadays go anywhere without at least a squad of Imperium's most rare and clandestine warriors accompanying them.

You need one HQ and one Troops choice from Codex: Grey Knights to wield a single Imperial Assassin, who is an Elite choice from that codex. No you cannot have more than one in a single allied detachment. (Though at 2000pts you can take two allied detachments.)

Your Troop options are few different types of Grey Knight Squads, HQ choices are either various GK characters or Inquisitors.

However, there are also lesser type of assassins, known as Death Cult Assassins (they wield power weapons and come in groups of at least three.) Unfortunately they're also an Elite choice, so you normally cannot have them in same allied detachment as the Imperial Assassin.

However, however! There is one way around this. A special character called Inquisitor Coteaz allows you to take DC Assassins (as well as various other types of henchmen) as Troops instead of Elites. If you take him as your HQ, you can take then DC assassins as your one mandatory Troop choice (you can still have GKs as your second ally Troop choice but you don't have to) and then have one Imperial Assassin as your one allowed Elite choice.

Or do what we did in our group. We agreed that codex assassins still stands. Any imperial army can have one. Fun times.

For it to be legal, you will need to get the Grey Knight codex AND the Imperial Guard codex.

We can't give you stats or rules for these units (board rules) here.

You are no longer limited to just one assassin in a GK army, but you are limited to ONE of EACH temple (and restricted by FOC chart of 3 elites per detachment. An assassin is an elites choice). So you can't have more than one of each vindicare, calidus, etc.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

Yes, but he is using them as allies, so only one Elite choice.

Thanks for the answers, all very helpful!

I'm guessing just 5 GK terminators on their own don't really count as a "Army"

So would I need some sort of Inquisitor as the commander / Leader for the GK's and some Assassins?

Even as a allies to my Imperial Guard Army?

Because wouldn't they be under command from my Imperial Commissar or General?

You need a HQ for the allied detachment, yes. It can be either a Grey Knight character or an Inquisitor.

Actually no. The Inquisitor has unlimited command over nearly all Imperial organizations (The only exception would be the Custodes and probably the higher ranks of the Mechanicus), so normally the Inquisitor would set the goal of the operation and can easily displace any Commander at his own will. If you want to see it this way they are like Commissars only for the whole Imperium.

Actually a squad of 5 Terminators with an Inquisitor and a Vindicare is a nice small allied Detachment and gives you a nice variation to play with so you are not stugged with the same IG units the whole time.

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too!

Take a cheap 25pt Inquisitor. Use the Termies as the GK troop choice then take the assassin. Upgrade one of the Terminators to Justicar Thrawn(He is unkillable and annoying).

Expensive tho --- The GK Termies w/ Thrawn and 1 Psycannon are 300pts and the least costly assassin is 130pts. The one I like the most is the Vindi and he is 145pts.
Also the Inquisitor for 30 more points make him a Psyker w/ a power sword and he and his unit can reroll all hits and damage if you take Divination from the BRB.

The basic rules are that an Allies detachment must be AT LEAST 1 Troop and 1 HQ, and once you have those you can have a total of 2 Troops, 1 HQ, 1 Elite, 1FA and 1HS in your allied detachment.

Given that you only have 50 guardsmen, I think you could swap it round and run the Grey Knights as your MAIN army, and Guardsmen as your allies. Then you could run more assassins. I think Grey Knights can be in units as small as 3??

Main army

HQ - Inquisitor (or Coteaz)
ELITES - All your assassins - up to three of them
TROOPS - Your Grey Knights

Allies

HQ - Company Command Squad
TROOPS - Infantry Platoons

1) Buy the damn Codex
2) Read the damn COdex
3) ??????
4) Profit

It always astounds me that there are so many people who come online and ask someone to explain the rules of the game/units to them because they can't be bothered to buy their own army's codex.
