My wife just came home with two of these! Obviously the first thing that comes to mind is painting them up like bunkers. Adding a piece of artillery to the hole in the middle would be cool, I don't know that SW can use artillery though. Anyway, I figured you Dakkadians could help me come up with some other ideas. Other than egg-carton bunker/dragon's teeth, this will be my first terrain project. I also though of taking the miniature from the rhino kit, the one that's just peeking out of the hatch, and gluing him on as though he's using a mounted storm bolter, or just surveying the surroundings. May have to hit up the model shop to see what kinds of diorama goodies I can find. Also, I know polystyrene cannot be painted directly with primer, but this is different. It's quite...plastic like. If you know the type of which I'm speaking and have used it, do you know if this can be? If not I'll just do a test on the inside or bottom and see what happens.

I see a massive dark metal train with pipes all over it and gothic windows and all.
But not very SW'ish so the next best thing is a snowed in sloped bunker with many gunmounts.
As for the hole: Have you tried to fit a predator into the hole? If it fits you could add a door to one side so that a tank can roll in and fire away while beeing protected by massive concrete armor.

Hmm...it would be possible to do. I don't have a predator, but it worked with my Rhino/Razorback. Won't fit with side sponsons though..

You mentioning a big Gothic train makes me think of a Necron barge.

To make it so you can prime it seal I with Elmer's glue, a few coats if that and you should be able to spray it with some primer. I've done it with styrofoam before.

Thanks! I'll do that! Anyone else have ideas?

Another suggestion for texture and protecting it - thinned down spackle. It gives it a bit of a concrete feel and texture and if you cheat and add a bit of paint to it while thinning it, color as well.

No, don't use it as terrain.

That stuff ( as opposed the white expanded polystyrene) effectively self-heals when pierced, making it absolutely ideal for painting blocks. Mount your parts for painting on cocktail sticks / toothpicks as handles. When painted, poke the stick into that open-cell foam. Try it. A bunch of stuff in the same block is great for batch painting. This stuff also doesnt react so badly to spray paint.

Expanded foam tends to get very weak very quickly once it has holes in it. I guard my stash of the stuff you pictured quite jealously.

Use textured paint! That staple of the 90s, now seemingly forgotten. Grab some from a hardware/DIY/decorating store. I used so many tester pots of textured paint back in the day making conrete bunkers it was silly.

That's a good idea! This stuff has a pretty good texture already, but I'll lose it if I have to coat it with glue. I'm going to go try priming it now.

I also thought of using a can or similar sized cylinder and some pvc pluming endcaps and what not to mount in the center of one of them on its side like some fuel tank or energy generator.

Well, primer doesn't hurt it, but it sure has a hard time sticking and drying on it!
