Subject: Wargames Factory Rereleases Skeleton Warriors. OLD Skeleton Clearance @ MM
|
 |
Lord of the Fleet

Well they said they were going to re do them, looks like they finally did
However besides a few new parts (like a new head here and there, different shields, and some bases), it looks exactly like their old skeleton set which means its going to be hell to put them together.
Was hoping for something a bit more modeling friendly. Unless they did change something that I dont know about
Then again I could be a whiner, has anyone else here have had more success with the wgf skeles? And its not like they're bad quality wise. I think they're great, especially since they're bare bones skeletons without any armor on so they can be used for any type of skeleton. I just HATE the building of them.
They claim its on sale now and that they havent updated the old pics on their site yet
For those who never got the old set, this is what it looked like. A bunch of tiny sprues. Technically I guess it was more annoying to deal with all these tiny sprues

I remember they thought it was genius to have a bunsh of tiny sprues that they could reuse between different sets. then after the historical sets, they made sets so radically different that they wouldn't reuse bits between them. plus all those tiny sprues had to be repacked once they got stateside. It was more labor intensive, and probably didn't save them all that much in all.
The new skeletons are a definite improvement. I just noticed that all the weapons woulnd't look out of place in a Khemri Army as well.

Apparently they have made the pieces the skeletons are made from a bit beefier so as to deal with the breakages that had been reported.

Other than bases on the sprue, they look the same. They don't look any beefier.

Agreed, didnt see any difference at all so it looks like its back to good ol snapping the arms in half and haphazardly connecting the feet Unless they have and I cant tell from these pics

The thigh bones are a bit thicker and the feet wrap around the ankle instead of the leg just sitting on top of the ankle. Way more heads too.

I kinda like them.
Might buy a few boxes - to litter my terrain with skeleton pieces (not just skulls ala GW)...
Bows look nice too - might come in handy for some Mongol inspired Marauder Horsemen.

Yeah they look a little different. It's worth giving them a try as I think they look great - just the old ones were very fiddly and fragile.
I'll probably get a set to see the difference as I like the minis, I just hope these ones are more robust. At least now you can get 30 Spearmen or Swordsmen out of the box - as well as 15 bows - not bad. It's good to see they've taken the criticism and made improvements to the kit.
I like the look of the new shields too

Any idea how much these guys are, and how they scale? If inexpensive and scaled correctly, could use these to make some chaos terrain, adorn vehicles, etc etc.

Yup
Wargames Factory after their initial sets have all their boxes set at $20 (I'm not sure if thats a good thing or bad thing)
And of course you have your usual discount places. MM ticks off 25% so that means its 50 cents a skele
Heres a size comparison with their old skele I've found. He looks a wee taller but I think his knees arent as bent as his colleagues

Wow... might pick up a box when I order my next set of Eisenkern then. Hard to beat at that price.
I imagine I could also convert them to carry guns and equipment from the Acceosry sprues, so use them as "plague undead" for my chaos army. Or scenario specific pieces.

I'm thinking of buying them for terrain accents: dead skeletons everywhere. Sure beats Secret Weapon miniatures skeletons in price by a long margin. Finally, I can add hanging skeletons on my hanging tree.

One of the things about Wargames Factory is that everyone dismissed them after their first half-dozen or so awful kits, but since then they've improved massively. Their Samurai are fantastic, the WW2 figures, the Dreamforge stuff, everything released since 2010 basically... and the quality and value of their War of the Spanish Succession plastics is what got me into gaming Marlburian. (36 infantry in a box?! hell yeah!)

those originally released were hopeless. I'd glue an arm on and the head would break off, I'd glue the head back on and the thigh bone would snap. I gave up on them and they will be used for heaps of bones as base decoration.
I found an alternative in the meantime and converted vampire counts skeletons with WF equipment.

This is probably what I'd use them for as well, but either way the price and the kit look pretty sweet. Far better than GW's prices, that's for darn sure.

One thing I hated in the original that I'm curious to know if they fixed was the arms
Arms were ball sockets, the place to put the arms? Almost completely FLAT surface area. I could not get them to look consistently put together

I might get some for skeleton archers (even if you only get 3 bows on the sprue), but for general usage, Mantic wins since they don't have a spine join, instead you glue part of the lower back ribs to the upper.
Less breakages overall.

Sure, and I love Mantic skellies, but they're pre-armored. Wargames Factory's skellies are nice unarmored skeletons useful for any occasion (and actually cheaper)

Tis true, while very annoying to put together you can use them for nearly anything if you're tenacious enough (which for the old skeles, I am not)
Someone made some skeleton/zombie samurai with them

Much better proportions than GW, but those old skellies were horrendous. Most of my arms were broken on sprue when I took them out of the box. Removing them off the sprue broke several others (even with brand new Xacto blades). And trimming mold lines and gluing was nightmarish on those fragile things. Eventually I just kept the skulls and weapons and tossed the rest.
These look better laid out. Still look awfully fragile, though.

Yea same here
> or =$20 for a box of skeletons bitz? ehh not a bad deal
I guess that is the problem of plastic skeletons though. Either
A. Too thick (Old GW)
B. Too thin (WGF, unknown if new ones are better)
C. Already defined genre (New GW and Mantic)
NEWS FLASH
old WGF skeletons are now a clearance item on Miniature Market (unknown at other stores)
Now they're a measly $12. Though they say they only have 11 in stock so I'm wondering if it'll immediately go away once those rune out
