I am wondering how one would go converting the standard lasguns to something better?

I always trot this pic out when people ask this question. Couple of fairly standed conversions here. There are also plenty of 3rd party websites that do 28mm guns that suit Imperial Guard.

Hassle free minis does heaps of Sci-fi guns and moden day guns.
